Thanks for your response AussiePaul. I recognise that an ABN is required. I am asking about the classification/category that should be used when registering for an ABN. i.e., UberX drivers are required to classify their business activities as taxi/limo services. UberEATS drivers are not providing a Taxi/Limo service, so my question is what should be used instead?
Yes courier or food delivery. I think they have a list you can choose from.

Go to ATO site & search for 'ANZSIC Code 51020'.
Should bring up 'Courier Pick-up & Delivery Services'.
You'll find 'Restaurant Food Pick up & Delivery Services' has the same ANZSIC Code Number (51020).
Reckon you just classify yourself as 'Services under ANZSIC Code 51020' on ATO paperwork.

I did uberx for a month in 2015 without an ABN without an issue, declared it In the business section of the tax return. I earned under $1,000, but still, you could class it a "business".

I just don't see a point in having the ABN, unless you are making documentation i.e. Invoicing.

In the case of contracting, the entity contracting you to perform the services is required to withhold 49% of all monies owed to you and submit it to the ATO, if you don't supply them (Uber in this case) with your ABN. If Uber ever decided to (or were forced to) play straight with the ATO, you wouldn't see that 49% till after your tax return - defeats the purpose of working for immediate payment.
But we all know about Uber's attitude to any form of compliance.
My dealings with the ATO suggest that playing by their rules is the way to go.
That way they don't come looking and demanding. ABN supplied to Uber = clean sheet for you.

I just poked around in the profile section and can't even find a way to provide my ABN to Uber..

I only got my ABN because I am an after hours GP driver also.
You dont need to supply your ABN to uber, they don't care, just drive , they will take their fee, the rest is up to you

Oh yeah and if you need a work ethic update and mentoring see Super Uber Driver

It definitely seems that you wouldn't really need an ABN to do UberEATS then. It's only for disclosure to businesses that will require it or else withhold 49%.

I doubt any of the hordes of backpackers getting around on crappy 50cc scooters, random bicycles or $500 bombs have ABNs to be honest.

I can't wait to receive a letter with something to the effect of "hey you haven't registered for GST but there's Uber's in your bank every week, plz explain"

It's a bit different for someone who does it for 1 month and then stops or a backpacker who does it for 3 months and then stops.
If you have the intention on doing UberEats ongoing the ATO would expect you to have an ABN.

Also UberEats does not require you to have an ABN registered for GST.

According to business.gov.au:
business.gov.au/info/run/tax/register-for-goods-and-services-tax-gst

You must register for GST if:
  • your business has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more
  • your non-profit organisation has a turnover of $150,000 per year or more
  • you provide taxi travel for passengers in exchange for a fare as part of your business, regardless of your GST turnover. This rule applies to both taxi owner drivers and people who just rent a taxi.

How are they crooks?

You always get paid more than $5 a delivery and that's all they charge customers. How the hell would that be sustainable? Exactly, it wouldn't be.

They take 30% of the restaurant because they have relieved them of the requirement to have delivery drivers, AND provided a super simple method for customers to order the food..

ALSO... some restaurants such as Brooklyn Depot charge WAY MORE if you order via UberEATS. Their burgers are a good $4 a piece more than if you eat in. won't catch me ordering them via Eats any time soon. It's cheaper for me to travel the Go Between Bridge return to go pickup from there than to pay extra for delivery and extra because it's Uber!

Do I need to apply for ABN and register for GST thingy if I only do UberEATS?
There are different answers in the forum and I'm quite confused on it. Can someone please share your experience and thoughts? Thanks!!

This is what happens when some know what they're talking about, and others don't.

If you're only doing EATS, then yes you will need an ABN, and no you won't need to register for GST unless you earn more than the $75K threshold.
