Hello, I tried to sign in on Uber today and it keeps giving me these messages I've never seen before:

I have tried updating the app, uninstalled and reinstalled...I guess my phone is too old for uber now. It's stuck on android 9 because that's the latest it'll allow me to go. Looking it up I guess the current android is 14. I guess I need a new phone, but what is good enough for uber's standards now, that I can get below, say $100? Does Uber post these requirements anywhere? Any suggestions for trustworthy cheap phone sales? I've never had to buy a phone, it's always come with the network.

It will let me keep driving through these continuous popup messages, and I've seen orders pop up, but it won't let me see my earnings...says there's a "network error" then, and leads to a blank page. So I'm not going to keep driving until this is fixed. For all I know it's not even recording that I did the trips right.

The other no-english drivers here in Los Angeles with their 2+ phones never have to deal with this shit I bet. They have the best phones, get the best orders with tons of pings, and never seem to get deactivated. If they do, they just jump to another gang-provided account, but for the sake of sanity I'm gonna pretend this is an even playing field and there's still hope if I just upgrade my shit and "H U S T L E"....

$100 phones are $200 now. I know because all I ever buy are $100 phones. Below is my latest. Be sure to get a 5G phone regardless, as it gives you best chance of getting a ping as quickly as everyone else.

If you know who the best cellular provider in your driving locale is this is the time to think about switching if need be.

Thanks, I will look into those...guess I can shell 200 if it means uber will WORK again. I went out and tested it. Won't even let me accept an order now, says something went wrong. It shows the order but once I hit accept that happens. Tech support has confirmed I'm not banned or something and their only advice was get a new phone.

Now I'm looking for an older uber client, there have been a lot of times in the past it wanted me to upgrade and I put it off for a long time and it kept working....until I decided to try it and all the problems started...so maybe the version from february will still work long enough for me to get a new phone

If that doesnt work, factory reset and I'll have to miss all the other apps and stuff I had on my phone all because of uber. And if even that doesnt cut it i guess I'll have to go out to the in-person store and see what they got that's like what you guys recommended for whatever network.

All the versions say android 8 and up. I have 9. WTF.

Thanks I'll look into that. Do you happen to know what the earliest version of uber that included the 'diagnostic' button in the top of the help menu? I am looking for that version because that one I know worked...its later than Sep 2023 apparently, I've tried a bunch.
All this just to get some $3-5 orders maybe.

The phone @OldChicagoDriver recommended (Unlocked Motorola g power 5g 2023) is a good phone and a good value at $200. Best Buy has it on sale for $199.

If that phone is unavailable look for an unlocked phone that has at minimum either a MediaTek Dimensity 700 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset (processor), 64GB of storage, and 4GB of RAM.

Both the Dimensity 700 and the Snapdragon 480 are entry-level 5g chipsets with enough power to run your Uber app without difficulty.

I have always had the best as it's a tax write off and it's my income. And I enjoy great phones. 15 pro max and hi end Samsung's.
It's a small price to pay to not miss 1 to 2 trips a week that are money rides. Phones in this business pay for themselves.
I had a driver friend Years ago . We only drove events surge . $2k plus everyweek.
He was cheap. Had older car. That's fine.
But omg metro pcs. With limited data. Really..
He needed wifi..all this to save a few bucks.
This guys car was to me a pos but clean. He only took longer trips.
Funny thing. Ubers algorithm knew this and gave him alot of 100 mile or so rides with big surges.

I'm still using and enjoying my unlocked Samsung S21 that I bought slightly used in mid 2021 for $700. I used to be that $100 locked phone with service contract guy, and I've got a drawer full of old phones to prove it, but now I think I'm a flagship model convert. It's just so much faster running multiple apps, launching Google Maps from Uber and navigating in 1 second or less, etc. And it's still showing no signs of slowing down or being denied an OS update.

EDIT: Oops... just found this:

"Samsung will continue to release new updates for the Galaxy S21 series until the first quarter of 2026. Meanwhile, the OS upgrades support for the S21, S21 Plus, and S21 Ultra is scheduled to end with the release of Android 15 next year."

Still, not so bad. Who knows, I might still get a year or two out of it after OS upgrades end.

Ok thanks all, I ended up with a moto power 5g 2023 from target. We'll see how it goes so far its working and seeming pretty fast but might trade it out for the online one. The target price was pretty much what I saw online, it was apparently on a last minute sale. Buying a phone in person is a lot harder than I ever thought. I thought I'd just go down the block to the verizon store near me, didnt even bother eating first...3 hours, 5 stores (including one i had to wait outside and ring the bell for to get in) and aggressive upselling attempts later, a target phone is working with visible and I can at least drive again tonight while mulling over the other options. Came with a bunch of apps I dont want including tiktok that I uninstalled. So if any future readers need it, phones from target work on visible. Next, I'll upgrade the network, I heard visible+ is about as good as a mid-tier verizon, but that'll take a day. At least I'm back to driving now

Not seen one of you talk about the GPS Protocols of the phone, if it's a Samsung yeah it probably already has a decent GPS but it's not a Samsung you need to check, seems like most of you don't know damn thing about what you're talking about, that's why I stopped heavy posting here, this site's a joke no real information at all it's a bunch of keyboard Warriors.

Do your homework and research know what you want to buy before you go into the store

If you want something that's a decent phone will be a update for few years, look at something like the Samsung a15 5G unlocked you can get it at Amazon for $200 or less you might even get a refurbished one for around 170 160, if you look hard enough,
The A15 is not water and dust proof resistance so it needs a decent case, I mentioned that because you said you do Uber Eats so you're going to be getting in and out of your car a lot with the phone obviously

Had A15 5G for 2 weeks but I took it back and got A54 5G because I'm a heavy multitasker and I need a little more power it also has a great camera also has a brighter screen 1000 nits, A15 is 800 nits still decent, but if you don't care about multitasking or the camera the A15 5G is a decent phone
