Lost item help

My son was in an Uber before Xmas and left his airbuds - yikes, an expensive item to leave...

He contacted Uber and the driver and it was acknowledged the driver found them by both the driver and Uber - documented by email to my son. My son has been trying to contact the driver to get back, and now the driver picks up and hangs up. Uber now is sending my son a generic email saying that lost items may not be found, etc.

Is there a number for riders, not routed overseas with canned answers, to help resolve this? Any other suggestions (other than not forgetting items in cars and an expensive lesson learned, which is a given)? I guess he could go to a Hub, but he lives in in the burbs, and why should he have to do that? I've had two items left in my car, and I got them back to owner right away, and collected my $15. My son was willing to pay a reward to return and pay the $15. I guess my son could go to the cops now and fill out a report, but again, why should he have to go to those lengths? What the heck is the matter with people?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You’ve pretty much exhausted your resources through Uber. You understand, being a driver yourself, how it works.

Your son offered a reward as well and that didn’t help. I dunno, seems like he’s minus an expensive set or AirPods.

Sorry, that does suck. Maybe someone else will pop-in with a helpful idea.

Each driver is an independent contractor - self employed ... so, you will hear many approaches to this problem.
Personally, I find the liability too great to admit to possession of other people's property. I have problems taking care of my OWN chit; I really don't have the time or energy to watch out for yours.
I either a) dispose of the property, or b) put it to good use.

PS: Did he tip the driver? This is often the deciding factor as to how much I am willing to help. A tip demonstrates the riders willingness to help me out ... so I'm more likely to return the favor. Did he tip?

The driver made a mistake by admitting he had it. My response is always the same .. "never saw it, don't see it, prolly won't see it. Bye."
You should have taught your son better manners in regards to giving gratuities to people who serve him. Is that they way you were raised?
Did he also down rate the driver because he lost his ear buds?

Next time read what I said more carefully. He realized RIGHT AFTER he got out of car that they were left behind. He wasn't going to tip until he got back, but then tip well. I would teach them that over and over again. How were you taught? Let people take advantage of you and tip them???

Wow...you guys don't read or understand. Got out of car, car drive's away, realized airbuds gone. I talked to him when I started driving because he believed in the initial dribble that tipping included. He now tips, but NOT WHEN SERVICE IS UNFINISHED. I would never tip a waiter if I didn't get my dessert brought to me and my coffee.

No you don't understand.
The moment he gets out of car the service is finished.
He should have tipped even if he didn't lose airbuds.

I've had people tip me and then I realize they left something behind. I quickly went back to return it to them before they even realized they lost it.
Why? Because they tipped.

Had they not tipped then I wouldn't have found it.

Only asking for a friend, and I don't have a lot of details. Short story. Took a ride. Left earbuds. Driver and ubes confirmed.
Driver appears to have a change of heart about returning property.

Don't wanna get driver in more trouble. Do want my flipping buds back.

Driver is now playing telephone games.

Ideas?

Get the driver in all the trouble you can. Theft is theft.

You not the first to learn that lesson.
It's a pretty 'real' group here. We capitalists.

Got a story for ya though.
The waiter brings your food, beverages and desert. Helps you out to your car with your doggie bag. Goes back to the table to see that you left NO tip. Zero. Notices you left a real nice dinner jacket behind.
Next day you come back looking for your jacket.
Do you think he gives much of shit if you find your jacket again?
He prolly cares as much about your feelings, as you do about his. You've already made your feeling known.

Cast upon the water and you receive ten fold.
Cast nothing and you get to be cold and with no coat.

lol.

Yes, the FBI is going to be all over this

Send text message:

Dear Uber driver:
Sorry I left my buds in your car, but, I just want my buds back.
Please don't make this difficult. (My brother is with FBI, and I have
your name and license plate number.)
Hoping to hear from you within next 12 hours.
(You will be entitled to receive $15 per Uber policy)
Regards,
You contact Fbi they track driver to location through his phone. They forward drivers location to you. You intimidate driver with a gun and badge and he hands you your buds Before you walk away you tell him .. "you ducked with the wrong passenger." Imma let it slide this time. Then stroll away with the buds in your ear loud enough so he knows your listening to beastie boys fight for your right

Everyone goes home no harm no fowl

Don't play around with this Ad ... just do it!

Hey! I'm still on the lam from when a pax threatened to have the FBI come after me because I kicked her and her friend out at a 24-hour Dunkin Donuts after she got all sorts of loud and ride with me because she was going to be charged a $150 cleaning fee for her friend getting sick in my car.

I'm trembling, I tell you! TREMBLING!

Exactly! As soon as your kid realized his mistake, he should've tipped! Thus establishing goodwill between he and his driver. Then go to work on getting his property back with the benefit of having the driver on his side.

The driver may yet return the buds. The more hassled I feel from a rider wanting my help in recovering from their error, the less expedient the return.
social contract of "goodwill", I very much like and agree to concept

I'm calling KahKah on this whole story. I think this is Carlos posting as his wife...shiz kahkah

Not sure what this guy was looking for. Not every Uber driver is nice and just because they answer your calls doesn't mean they want to give it back to you. Sometimes giving a little is how some thefts try to buy more time and calm you down. Hiding in plain sight is one of the best criminal moves and what gets people to spend more time making this thread than make real moves to get the perpetrator. Think about it, if he never picked up the phone you probably would have actually made a move to call the cops. With him "picking up the phone" you lower your guard and let his hide in plain sight maneuver start working. I assume he actually responded at first and now pulls the pick up and hang up deal.

If the Uber driver is giving you the run around then you have to get police involved or else. The fact that you didn't want to even go through the effort to go to the hub shows it's not THAT important for you. How do you know your son doesn't wanna go through that effort? It's his property any way.

There's pax out there that would have been called cops and the fire department for things less expensive. This thread is another example of people spinning their heads around over common sense shit. If I lose something I assume I'll never see it again first and work to see if I somehow get it back. That's life.

There's a lot of garbage in the replies to the Original Poster. (I really wanted to use the c word that ends in p.)

Here's my take on it, which is different.

Because the driver has acknowledged finding them (and I hope it's by text or something else you've saved) contact Uber's support and insist that your complaint be escalated. Be polite but firm.

Your primary goal is to recover the goods, obviously. Turning up the heat that way improves the livelihood of that by a lot.

Your secondary goal may be to get some disciplinary action taken against the driver, who's clearly an a**hole. The ultimate of that may be permanent deactivation of the driver. That may not be likely, *unless* the driver has pulled this kind of stunt before.

Yes, it seems extreme. But consider the riders who will be seeing this driver in the future. Even a temporary deactivation may sting, particularly if the driver is doing it full time.

Good luck and keep us posted. Oh... and check out the other threads on this site, where drivers complain about getting deactivated. It may give you hints about what else could work.

Wow. You're a driver and this is your attitude? I don't understand.

The driver did everything she was supposed to do. Everything you're asking of her now is going above and beyond.

See, I dropped off a couple of drunks one night and the woman was so wasted she barely managed to crawl through the car curb side. She said something about looking for all her stuff, so I turned on the overhead light, helped her look around and grumpily said, "your phone is on the floor there, I see nothing else. Get. Out." This was the woman who supermanned her way into my backseat over her husband's lap (whoever saw that comment). I did NOT want to deal with any left behind items from them because I was already planning on hitting them with a 1*
