Getting Back into Driving

I was a driver before the pandemic. I did Uber and Lyft, thousands of rides but I've been out for a few years now. I am thinking of getting back into it. I used to focus on Friday and Saturday nights and morning commutes for the highest return.

I'd like some advice:
Which is paying better right now, Uber or Lyft?
About how much can you make driving full time?
What are the best times to go out?
Thanks

That's an extremely good strategy that ChatGPT recommends.

All the other times just take one along a current trip using the Directional Filter.

Which is paying better right now, Uber or Lyft?
With both now having Upfront Fares, which is a variable rate depending upon how many drivers etc. it's impossible to tell.

About how much can you make driving full time?
You will not profit doing this full time, as Uber and Lyft are paying based upon a currently subsidized vehicle, phone etc by some other source, like a pension or a full time job. It's why the Prop 22 Uber created in California only reimburses the drivers .36 cents a trip mile instead of the IRS stanandard deduction of .70 cents a mile. Then they don't pay for deadhead miles neither.

You try to do it as your only income source you will (like 50-70% who quit annually) lose.

What are the best times to go out?
Pretty much exactly the times and days you specified with extremely low deadhead of course.

ChatGPT has it all figured out now.

Well they asked for less gloom and doom and more optimism and by golly it looks like that got it!! Great job my friend for not scaring the heebie-jeebies out of the poor guy. 👍

Those are still the best times to drive in most areas. It's hard to say which pays better, it varies by market and type of ride and occasionally one offers better promos than the other so it's probably best to work with both companies. As far as how much, that's very regionally dependent but what i can say is that it will be less than you made before. Rates and promotions have dropped significantly since the pandemic so these days it's better supplement to an income as opposed to a FT gig.

You're spot on with busy times to drive. It's somewhat market dependent, but those times are generally best.

Not gonna lie, it's the worst its ever been in my 9 years of driving. I started in Oct 2016 and have consistently driven since then, although I've drastically decreased driving hours over the last 6 months.

Which is paying better right now, Uber or Lyft? I strongly recommend running both apps at the same time and cherry picking the best rides. Focus on $/mile. Currently, Lyft has been better to me. But it flip flops on a regular basis.

About how much can you make driving full time? I used to be able to pull around $30/hr after expenses. And that was with a much less efficient vehicle. Now, I can barely pull $20/hr after expenses. And that's with having an acceptance rate in the single digits because I only take rides that pay well or are short and offer a high $/mile. If you're taking everything they're sending you and you don't control your costs (that scenario makes up most drivers), you'll likely make around $10/hr if you're lucky.

It's a rough time to enter rideshare.

What are the best times to go out? All market dependent. In my region, Friday afternoon, around 2:00pm is when I head out. Saturday after about 4:00pm. I don't drive Sundays and I no longer do weekdays but for my area, 6:00am - 9:00am was good M-F.

May the force be with you. I tell anyone who asks, that nearly anything is better than rideshare but it admittedly has the perk of flexibility. Which makes it ideal as a side gig during hours that you have available and aren't busy. But I would, under almost no circumstances, consider it for reliable income or do it as your only job. That's going to be a strong fail unless you're one of these that can't do anything else due to some sort of handicap or you're retired and financially independent and are doing it just to be social.

I'm at the point where I do it for about 15 hours total, only on weekend nights, rarely later than about 11:00pm to avoid the pukers, and when I don't have anything else I'd remotely prefer doing. I'm divorced and it's usually the weekends when I don't have my kids. I spend the time listening to audio books or whatever, until I get tired, then I go home. That's it. But back in the day (as early as 6 months ago) I was working 60 hours a week with 12-14 hour days on the weekends. The apps kick you off after 12 but if you're working both, you can turn them off when you have a ride with the other so it doesn't count time. That's another discussion ;)

Not sure where you are, but that's the formula for Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC - perfect. I don't do mornings anymore. There was a period when reservations started here in 2022, I could work from 2am to 8am (all reservations) and make maybe $350 - $380. Now I have to drive close to 12 hours to make $380-$420 on a Friday and Saturday night (each). I notice 95% don't tip, and weed is legal here and it stinks my car up continually - you'd hate to know everything I do to get that stench out of my car.
