For your DAC or PHV license, it specifically says your vehicle is used for business and must be registered according.

So when you renew your DAC or PHV it will be a requirement, at the moment RMS is not enforcing it nor is Uber...

But this will change some time this year....

If you follow the law of this country, you have to register your car as business because it is earning you money, no questions asked.
If you want to follow what Uber is saying (It's US based company and not OZ in case you don't know), they don't care what you do as you are not working for them. You are responsible to pay your tax and GST to the for government of Australia.
I changed my car registration from Private to Business right after I received that email from Uber a couple of weeks ago.
Now that they sent that email, you have no way out. You cannot say that you don't know about it.
At the end of the day, you make your decision that suits you best.

So, how hard is it to go back to private usage should you stop driving for Uber?
in this case its easy , just give service NSW a call and they will do that for you and also they will refund you the extra amount you paid for the rest of the period.
to change from Private to business you also can give them a call and they do it over the phone.

I personally when to the Uber office in concord, as I just change the car, the staff told me that this is totally up to me either "business" or "private", Uber accept for both..so i still choose the private.
Anyway I feel this is bit of grey area.
There's nothing grey about it. It's black & white. Car must be registered for business because it's the law.

What if your renting a car for uber?
You won't have to worry about the registration of the car; therefore you won't have an issue with RMS as long as your full licenced.
You are now left with the tax man (ATO). You still need to lodge your BAS quarterly and report all the GST.

Most of us are registered as private, it's only the brown tongues who register as business
I was like you since I started, but after we all received that email from Uber regarding the GST, so I thought, I now have no way out. So, I converted everything to business although I am only working a dozen of hours per week.

This is on your Driver Authority application,

Part G- Awareness of vehicle registration for private hire vehicle I am aware that as a condition of the Private Hire Vehicle Driver Authority, I am required to ensure that any public passenger service conducted in a vehicle I drive is correctly registered under the Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2007 for use as a public passenger vehicle, and the correct amounts under the Motor Vehicle Taxation Act 1988 have been paid with respect to the use of the vehicle for business purposes

It doesnt talk about full time drivers either. This is because it applies to ALL drivers regardless of the number of hours you drive. Note under "current obligations" it says "To meet the current legal requirements, all hire car and rideshare drivers must:." . The use of the word ALL there is a dead give away

It's not grey at all. It's been spelled out in black and white on the government fact sheet for rideshare drivers. If you want to choose to follow the "advice" of some backpacker or millennial with a part time gig at the Uber hub instead of the fact sheet provided by the government body whos liable to fine you for breaching their regulations then go right ahead but dont whinge when it bites you in the backside.
"But the hot chick at uber told me it was up to me if I wanted to drive naked... I thought public nudity was a grey area..." Sigh...

Hi. I'm new here so bear with me.

Has anyone been able to insure their business registered vehicle for rideshare?

The only options with both Alliance and NRMA are for Private/Rideshare use. There are no options for Business/Rideshare use.

My situation is that I currently lease a vehicle under a Pty Ltd structure and it has to be (and is) registered for business.

The above insurers are happy to take my money (and say they'll make a note on the policy) but none of them will provide paperwork saying that the vehicle is insured for business and approved for rideshare. I've spent hours on this and spoken to their managers who are reviewing the current wordings. I've also had a broker looking into it without much luck.

I can't believe I'm the only person who has encountered the problem although the said insurers seem to think I am. Has anyone else come up against this?

That's what I know as well. Hopefully some members will show some light in this issue.

Few weeks ago one of our popular member Tony was in an accident, if I am not wrong he was with NRMA, not sure registered as business or private. Since rideshare insurance with NRMA only private, so can assume he got private as well (i might be wrong)!
