I can see that happening.
The irony of the recruitment is that east Austin is one of the hottest gentrification areas of the city right now, so the thought that they're going to be extending more opportunities to minorities is laughable. Uber's still throwing that $27 million earned like it's a huge windfall for the drivers.

The article doesn't even make any sense.

Why would anyone wanting to drive for Uber need to be living in East Austin? Most minorities that live there don't even own a car. And, even if they had a car and lived in East Austin, why would they stage there? It has already been established that most people that live there don't go far and don't tip.

And, what does it mean "East" Austin?

This story has all the earmarks of a hoax - the primary issue is a lack of riders in East Austin, not a lack of drivers. There's hardly ever a surge east of I-35.

Well, you guys have not seen me mad, but here goes:

Holy Fkn shit OMG WTF UBER you stupid fools!

FIRST off how late to the racist party can you be, UBER? Get a fcking grip, EAST AUSTIN is so GENTRIFIED now this is completely racist and race baiting the city council. Careful where you step, cause there is nothing but dung to walk into now.

I service EAST Austin all the time, and it is nothing but BNB renters, short term renters (wtf with austin as a "wedding destination city?"), and guys with beards, shorts, and long socks. All white people. Every time.

The idea that this is going to help poor people is a load of shit, you gotta have a car and gas money to do this gig. You have to come from some sort of means... which leads us to where this is heading in one direction...
SUBPRIME loans for cars for poor people to work for UBER. UBER will be the new SHARECROPPER, where you sign up to get a car and drive, but all you really do is give all your earnings to THE MAN.

Got a job, you can get a car!
No longer, friend, UBER will give you both for the LOW LOW price of 28% of your fares and $600 a month for your car. Welcome to the plantation!

This is wrong in so many ways; more attempts by UBER to get civic organizations on their side. A play from the UBER book as described in this article:
http://www.theguardian.com/technolo...hnology/2015/sep/15/is-ubers-ultimate-goal-the-privatisation-of-city-governance

"To build its Eastern empire, Uber is maintaining its infamously aggressive tactics by hiring an "elite team of launchers". The job advertisement sounds like Uber is looking for CIA operatives, not brand ambassadors: "At base, this job entails being dropped into a city or country where Uber has zero brand and physical presence, quickly figuring out who and what make that city run, and then building a new business from scratch - in a matter of weeks - which sets Uber up for long-term success".

With a well-financed combination of rapid roll-out and local infiltration, Uber hopes to overcome rival services and strict regulation."

The funny thing is they are so "behind the times", playing the race card. All I can say is every time UBER tries to manipulate city government with this type of PR crap, they are going to get a push back. It just might blow up in their faces if they screw enough minorities... when they hurt the ones they proclaimed they will help. Good luck with that, UBER.

Well ranted Son!! This is clearly just an attempt by Uber to play this "helping the poor and racially oppressed" card in order to fool the city council into thinking that they are good stewards for the community and should receive lenient regulation. It's transparent as hell but odds are they will get what they want because that's just how things work in Karl Rove's America.

It just makes you wonder though....can a ****ING week go by without some new roll out or bullshit or ass****ery coming out of Uber corporate?? I mean seriously?? Can't they, as a supposedly viable business, just employ regular business tactics for a few weeks and just operate on their merits and their product's success?? It's like there's a bunch of ****ing crack heads running the show over there.

I am really starting to hate Uber. And I mean that sincerely.

Yah. Yet another deception. One can set up hiring offices all over in Dove Springs or other impoverished areas, but how does that guarantee that people from more affluent sections of town don't go there and the nearby downtrodden do?.

We are extremely cynical here, and that is probably a good thing. Can't someone here just give Uber the benefit of a doubt and give them a standing ovation for noble attempt to fight impoverishment?

I am waiting for the next round of KLBJ ads for drivers that tout Uber's endeavor to end worldwide poverty.

Uber does nothing to keep their drivers around. They do everything to chase them off. Rate cuts, unfair rating system, unhelpful CSR's, false claims about potential earnings. Consequently, they constantly need to find new drivers to fill the never ending void. Unfortunately, they seem to have no problem finding new people to fill the shoes of those who get disgusted and quit.

Uber does not want well educated people capable of independent thought. They hate drivers who do not desperately need Uber to pay their bills. The smart drivers with nice cars, figure out the best times to drive and cherry pick the system. Quite often drivers like this, get disgusted with Uber and quit. Intelligent drivers do not believe insane pie charts that "prove" lowering rates will equal more money for them. Uber sends this crap to them and they get pissed and insulted.

Uber needs to find people who are unemployable anywhere else in society so they have no choice but to put up with Uber's lies, not question rate cuts and drive their crappy cars for Uber until the wheels fall off. These drivers need Uber to eat and try to pay their bills. Uber's perfect driver. If they could find something better they would, but no one else will hire them.

The quality of driver is getting worse and worse which is just how Uber wants it.

Pretty much perfect. Though I personally would have drawn a correlation between cab drivers and the Perfect Uber driver somewhere around.......here -- "Uber needs to find people who are unemployable anywhere else in society so they have no choice but to put up with Uber's lies, not question rate cuts and drive their crappy cars for Uber until the wheels fall off. These drivers need Uber to eat and try to pay their bills." :D

The market is already over saturated here with drivers of all varieties (cabbies,TNCs, rickshaws, electric cars, night owls, and gypsy cabs, and more?)

Pure PR stunt that has even duped well-meaning civil groups. If 5000 new drivers entered the market in the near future, well, few can make this work as it is. This is so preposterous that it is utterly inconceivable.

This makes me realize how delusional Travis and Uber management is. Delusional or just plain evil with their deception.

Ya'll are being ridiculous! This is awesome that uber is reaching out to Eastside. Yeah the area just East of downtown is a little gentrified, but its a big city and there are plenty of people who need work and have a car that qualifies, and for people who don't have a car, uber is better than a bus. I drive just late night on the weekends, and I get by fine. Yeah they cut prices, but that also means they are getting less of a cut. With lower prices, it means more people are inclined to take it, and so we'll have more people in our car! I made more money after the last price cut than I did before, and with ACL and F1 and college football? there is plenty of work to go around...

Oh, and "ass****ery" is a "regular business tactic" ...If you don't like driving that much, bye, i'll take your fares for you.

So lower rates = higher earnings?
Are you able to make $5000 in a week of you want? Is it really all up to you?

Have you bothered to figure your expenses? Gas is just the tip of the iceberg. Depreciation, wear and tear on your tires, brakes and interior.
I'm not saying that you aren't getting fares, just that the Uber illusion is that you're making a lot of money. The driving for me, is actually something I enjoy, and most of my riders have been enjoyable. The blatant lies and total manipulation by Uber's corporate arm is what we're all tired of.

BTW.....this is not the first time this has happened recently on this site. Is this really how low Uber is willing to stoop....trolling Uber forums??? I mean this is a totally new low for a "50 billion dollar" company.

Everyone please be careful with this stuff. I personally am pretty positive that this is happening and it's not just propaganda. These people are also trying to figure out who we are in real life as in....on our Uber driver profiles. I was approached by a shady MF on conversation here who wanted me to send them certain emails I'd received from Uber. Sorry but it was a little too obvious that they were trying to figure out who I am.

So yeah....keep calling out these *****es that are obvious Uber trolls and be careful with any and all identifying personal info. I mean is this REALLY what it's come to!!??

Without a doubt, this is a planted post from somebody at Uber. Anyone who has been driving Uber X in Austin for the last year can attest to the fact that 5000 additional drivers will result in a massive negative earnings impact for the new drivers and existing workforce, the latter of which have already been impacted by several recent rate cuts and are struggling to earn a decent hourly rate with the recent influx of drivers.

Well lets look at some other numbers prior to the latest cut by Uber, yes the number of riders were way down. This was do to the fact most people were on Vacation and what few Summer semester students from UT were on break. Uber did their price cuts claiming it would increase ridership. The first week NO increase in ridership, 2nd week a small upsurge. 3rd week and on huge upswing. Now lets see what changed in Austin ... those with brains have guessed it already. UT students returned. This correlation between price cuts and upswing in riders is false. The sole reason for the up swing in riders is the return of the UT students. With Uber cutting their prices they have only ensured a smaller amount of money for the drivers while they still get their 20% from UberX drivers not to mention increasing the cut they take from the higher level versions.

Uber is still making money if not more money sense the cut while drivers are making less.
