Uber is in it for the money. It is simple the less money the drivers make the more money Uber makes. They learned this when the lower the rates. Sure they can charge $2.00 a mile. But then riders might just take their own car. Just as an example if they charge $2.00 and provide X amount of rides. They lower the rates to under $1 a mile then provide more the 10 times the amount of rides.
Uber has just made more money off of booking fees than they would in commission fees off of the $2 a mile.
As for drivers. Just go down to the office. You will see a line of new driver trying to get activated, with the promise of making life changing money. This is what keeps Uber in business.

Uber chose the worst time in history to play old tired games that society is sick of. Yes, for a while their scheme worked, but look at them now? Their reputation is severely damaged and the chances of recovering it are slim to none.

I agree, Austin is WAY better. There's no comparison. I'd say it's 3 times better. Before Uber and Lyft came back, it was 5 times better.
Just with Uber and lyft alone the fares were nearly 50% more in Austin plus it was easier to catch the surges. I cannot even imagine what ride Austin is like

If you do end up driving in Houston, be sure to avoid the following 5 roads/interstates. (Coming from someone who has done over 3000 rides in Houston)

1. Fm1960/hwy6:
this one is seriously the worst filled with a trillion brain dead drivers and poorly timed lights...you end up getting nowhere and pick up very short rides.

2. Westheimer rd:
even though it's crosses the galleria, it's difficult to drive on with all the traffic and it's a bunch of short rides you pick up.

3. Richmond rd:
It is busy and filled with bumps and potholes

4. Alabama st:
It is busy and filled with potholes.

This interstate is a complete cluster****. There is so much construction around it, all the loop arounds are closed, and you almost always end up taking the wrong exit as the one you need to take is closed. One rider got really angry at me over this

Avoid driving on the east side of downtown...the neighborhoods aren't the best, there are potholes everywhere, long lights, and a mass amount of freight trains which you cannot get around

Also avoid driving on the slight south west side around alief. The area is extremely ghetto and is an unpleasant sight with typically short fares. But there are a lot of other ghettos just outside of the 610 loop around the beltway, so be sure to use your intuition

Yes, I know full well. Believe me. I know this entire city from north, south, east, west, and inbetween, and I know how to drive in this place. What I don't know how to do is justify doing it for such low rates. Can't figure that one out. So I just stay home. The stress is way too high, and the pax don't realize how miserable we are. I can't do it anymore. I only drive enough now so I can afford a massage once a week. My body and mind have been completely destroyed from 4 years of this crap. Destruction is all I have to show for. Thanks, uber/lyft/liberals/obama.

Lmao!!! I agree with you 150%. Have you done one too many ghetto grocery store pick ups too lol? lately what I've been doing is setting my trip filter to the airport to avoid that bs . I live in katy where sometimes I can get that good 45mile trip to it. However a lot of rides take me into places around the city as it is technically closer to the airport, and that's how I end up getting ****ed. Uber seriously needs to implement a policy where the driver makes $5 minimum for every rider that steps into the car period! It really pisses me the **** off that they can under cut the market so much to where the minimum ride payment is $2.29 to the driver.

A lot of times when I see I'm picking someone up at a Walmart, I just cancel the ride as I know it's extremely short, the people have spilled crap in my car before, they never tip, and then expect you to wait on them.

You basically just blamed Uber for problems that the city causes and cant fix. The roads, traffic, lights, all the BS to making it more difficult to get around........... that's HOUSTON's problem. But I agree a minimum fare should be imposed and if Uber cant collect its 50% off it then they should eat it for allowing the short trips. They basically pass off the short fare expense to drivers when it should be Uber or the riders who pay that. The only way to fight back on that is to not accept rides more than a few minutes (7-10) away. Then uber complains when you dont accept them lol. Such a joke.
