Uber PIN is *NOT* for passenger safety. Did I somehow become safer during the last 70 feet making the PIN no longer necessary? This feature was created to keep drivers from swiping the "Start UberX" button to see the passengers destination and potentially cancel a short ride.

I’ve had a few passengers set it after experiences where drivers take the ride anyway without them in it. Some drivers are willing to burn their account on that or bogus cancellation fees. I rarely encounter the feature anyway but yeah, if that had ever happened to you once setting it would feel like a great idea. Uber can be difficult to work with on some refunds. I don’t mind a simple security feature at all. And playing consumer advocate, why should they hope you can open the wrapper and spoil all the fun?
