Reason taxi shifts long vs uber

People like uber because it’s flexible and can work how many hours a night they want. Why don’t taxi companies allow you to drive regular 8 hour shifts . Before uber they were 12 hour shifts mandatory. Now some are 10. Wouldn’t they have much less turnover if they allowed people to work 8? What’s the thinking on their end of always having to train new people
let me explain it to you.

I knew exactly where the taxi I got tonight was parked before I walked in.

I got the keys at 8:31 and didn’t go online until 8:49.

thats 18 minutes I lost just getting in the car topping off the tank to back charge the previous driver.

that’s knowing exactly which car I was going to get and having everything work perfectly. If I have an issue finding the car in the lot that can add 10 minutes, if I have a problem it could take an hour to get off the lot. If the car I’m assigned to is late well shit sucks to be me.

Now an hour before I’m due back I have to stop taking fares.

why? Because I just have to or I’ll be late. Which puts me back early most of the time, not all the time but most of the time. Can I pro rate my rental for turning in 45 minutes early? Nope… because the last hour is technically contractually a grace period.

So take these two situations into account and the can company, in their infinite wisdom… they say that it’s not a 12 hour shift, it’s only a 10 hour shift. If you lose time from any sort of issue the clock doesn’t start running until an hour after you get the keys and it’s just assumed minor issues happen and whatever.

so in a 12 hour shift it’s really only 10 working hours by their system: but most of the time I get 10.5 working hours per 13 hour shift.

those two things at the front and tail of the shift cause this to happen.

12 hour shift- 10.5 hours.
10 hour shift- 8 hours. 76% (of 10.5)
8 hour shift- 6 hours. 57% (of 10.5 )
7.5 hour shift 5.5 hours- 52.38%

So reality is…. Going from a 12 hour shift to an 8 hour shift is likely much closer to half on the revenue than it is 2/3rds.

also you can’t fit 3 8 hour shifts with lunch breaks in. So it would have to be 3 7.5 hour shifts, which is only 5.5 working hours.

Steve, really nice info. How long you been driving a cab thier. And you did uber long ago when the pay was better correct??
2010 to now honestly. So 15 years.

when uber first started I switched over, then we pay cuts slashed away at the earnings I transitioned to doing taxi on Sunday/thursdau night and uber Friday and Saturday. Then the pay kept getting cut and I went back to taxi on Saturday with doing uber on destination filter. Then that stopped being worth the effort and around 2018-2019 ish I just stopped completely logging into uber and I downgraded my insurance back.

And for a period of time I could do uber taxi fares in the taxi

So there’s overlap.
