Playing Music In Your Car

Most of the complaints I get about Uber drivers from pax is about music. They say that drivers are playing music both loud and with vulgar lyrics. I have experienced the loudness part when I use uber as well. Why uber awards badges for music, I will never understand. Unless the pax requests the radio to be on, I don't have it on. There is plenty of down time to get your music on. Plus the pax are not in the car that long to begin with. Be professional.

I play 80's off of spotify and pandora - at a medium volume. I get Verbal Compliments all the time as they leave. I mean like daily! They seem to really like pop 80s ... I get badges and written notes on it.

If you have 80's on and have access to both lighting and regular usb in the back seat where they can grab it on their own and no hassles and a little polite convo... that's it ... I need not do anything else but get the passenger there. Everyone is happy. Sure I get the occasional 3 or even 1 .. I can handle occasional... but the majority of my rides are 5's and some 4s .... hardly any of 3 through 1's

remember - 80s
A charger in back with both - lighting and mini
Polite convo ..
Safe driving ..

Equals #Winning

everything else are GAMES
on THERE end

That concludes my Pro Tip on the week

Uber on

IMO, Uber shouldn't have a complaint option that says "music choice". How are we supposed to know our riders music taste? I'm not asking ever Tom, Dick, and Harry that walks into my car so they can blast some BS generic pop. They may not have a preference at all! Also, it's so subjective. What's next? Will they have an option to dislike the car choice? "Didn't like Mazdas".

I know I said this already, but people are so sensitive to silly stuff. For example, I don't like country music. I find it highly boring and numbing. At the same time, if my Uber driver wants to play country then have at it. People take a dislike for music and act like it offends them. I would never say I'm offended by country, or any music for that matter. It's music! Get over it.

I have a playlist specifically for rideshare. Contemporary jazz and piano by the likes of Andre Previn, Oscar Peterson, Nino Rota, Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach, Carl Doy to name of few. I start every ride at the top of the playlist. I get compliments all the time. Rarely, maybe once every 300 rides, I'll get someone who wants to hear something on their own phone and not because they don't like the music.

no music... I’m paid to drive from point A to point B. If they want music, they should hire a DJ.

I’m kidding, but I don’t usually play music unless requested. It’s usually one of 4 things after small talk:
1. headphones (music and convo not needed)
2. Conversation through the whole trip
3. Request for music.
4. Riders conversing with one another... in which case I’m ready to play a tune on Spotify at the slightest reference to a song of group.

Saturday night, had a group that wanted to listen to 104.3, rap from the lates 90s/early 2000s... I usually have top 40 songs from 2005-2010 playing on Spotify... Didn't change the rap station for the next ride, who were an older couple leaving a wedding. Wife asked to put on 'rock n roll.' As I do not know any rock stations (apparently 97.9 is no longer rock?) I asked, what radio station. She replied anything but this crap... I was like whatever drunk lady. The nice husband gave me a rock station to put on, so I obliged hoping this would be good enough.

However, on the way, Google Maps gave a slightly different route than she wanted to go to get around traffic... She asked where the f am I taking them. Her husband let her know that I'm just following directions on the GPS, I didn't say anything. (This was probably a 1/2 mile detour to get around traffic). She then started yelling directions from the back seat to go the other way. So without saying anything, I listened knowing we would double back and get stuck in traffic. As we are .4 miles away from their house, she asks "what is taking so long, this guy is terrible." While her husband is trying to calm her down. He is the only reason I didn't drop them off at a gas station 1/2 mile away from their place.

Once they were in front of their house, she huffed and got out of the car. He said sorry, gave me a fiver and said he hoped I made good money tonight.

This all started because rap music was playing, however, she was an ass.

Why play rap music or any kind of music that can be culturally divisive and sets a bad tone from the start? That's was your first mistake right there. The second was asking what radio station. You should already have a playlist designed for older couples. When you are ridesharing the only thing you want is to pick the rider up and drop them off without issue and move on to the next ride. Starting off on a bad note can lead to further issues. I have a 2-hour playlist of contemporary piano jazz (i.e. elevator music) that I restart every time I get a new rider. If they request different music, I change it and I pump it up as loud as they want. Before I get a new rider I change it back to jazz at the top of the playlist. I haven't had an issue in my car with any rider since I started playing jazz music last year. It sets a good tone.

This mf said rap, old school rap at that, is culturally divisive

Yall have these types of issues?

Mfs get in with me and know what time it is, you can exit the vehicle at any time and I will gladly end the trip

Yall need to keep control of ya cars and stop acting like wuss wusses

Anytime i think a mf got something to say, getting an “attitude” or anything out of ordinart, I’m on it.

“Excuse me, everythin alright?”

You have an issue, address it so we can try to get something solved.

I see why you have issues with riders. Let me explain it this way, your rider pool is mixed with people who have different tastes including music and you will frequently run into issues with riders by playing music that is associated with cultures they are not connected to. If you aren't going to try to make a rider feel comfortable then they will be uncomfortable with you which is exactly what happened in your last ride and they will most certainly ding you on ratings. Ditch the rap, pop, alternative, etc. and play music that is culturally neutral. Play what you like when no one else is in the car. Nothing stops a rider from making a false complaint against you and it will eventually happen if you piss the wrong rider off because of your arrogance in playing music in contrast to your rider's culture. Eventually you'll get a false complaint, be suspended, and you'll have to look back on that ride trying to get Uber to believe you instead of them, instead of looking forward to picking up another ride and making money.

Shakur - If I was a passenger and felt the same vibe and hostility in your car that I get from your post, I would do just as you said and ask you to end the ride. I would then complain to Uber that the hostility was over-heated. I suspect you don't come off as hostile as the post though as you've been at this a long time.

I understand the need to maintain a level of control in my car, but that doesn't justify disrespect for the people paying me for a ride. Like all things in life, there is a balance. I will facilitate reasonable requests and try to be nice even if I have to say no. Yes, it's my car but they are the paying customer. If it is unsafe to me, the passengers or my vehicle or distracting I firmly put a stop to whatever it is but otherwise I am pretty flexible. I did stop carrying an aux cord - too distracting.

I usually ask the passenger (on X rides over 10 minutes) if they have a preference for what is on the radio. Nine times out of ten they say what is on is fine and when they ask me to turn the channel I am happy to do so even if I don't like their taste. They want Hip-Hop Nation or Classical - I'm cool. I Find Sirius - The Blend boring as hell but that is my default go-to station particularly with female passengers. They almost always start singing along to whatever drivel they are playing ;)

Never had a complaint about my music but its normally old rock and roll with alternative music from the 90's. I can't drive people around with nothing playing, makes the ride awkward especially if nothing is being said. I'd also like to point out its at like volume "7" to "12" so not loud at all and only playing through the front speakers. never any complaints, but I have been in lyft and ubers before were the music was loud, I don't want to say vulgar but just unprofessional, I've even had drivers singing loudly to there music lol

Cognitive Dissonance The state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioral decisions and attitude change.

"I listen to wtf i want
You are more than welcome to exit"

"special characters to evade word censorship"

"Nowhere in my post do I talk about "disrespecting a rider,"

"I'm not hostile, I just don't tolerate any BS, it's my vehicle."

"relax and enjoy life....I only have a problem with people that can't seem to do that and worry about something as minuscule as music."

This all coming from a guy who brags about kicking a lady out of his car after she asked him to play something less "rappy".

Here is a book I recommend by the way:
