Picked up a 4.43 just to see how it would go... and guess what

Just did a quick Uber, was driving to the store for last minute shopping and got a ping as soon as I turned on the car. Less than a half-mile away, practically a neighbor of mine... 4.43 rating ouch! Why not, it's Xmas.

I pull up to the house, directly in front. Woman comes out, about 50, a little odd looking but no big deal. I wave at her. She walks over, asks me through the window if I'm her driver. Uh, yes I am. She says, "I didn't want to take someone else's ride." The street was otherwise deserted. OK...

Her destination is a hospital I go to frequently. 2.5 miles away. There are two ways one can go, just pick a main avenue. It's virtually the same time and distance. I pick way #2. She says "Oh wow you're going a weird way." I am not in the mood and say, "No... no.. It's not a weird way."

She mutters very quietly with a hint of aggravation and disbelief ... "I go [to this hospital] twice a day..." As if she is the supreme expert. When she in fact is so stupid and ignorant that she doesn't realize there are two nearly identical ways to go.

With my large, prominent GPS screen in full view of her, I begin the final approach. It's a couple of simple turns. She feels the need to tell me to "turn here!" ... as I'm turning.

Drop her off, thanks bla bla... One-starred her, that's that! Merry Xmas!

People hate backseat drivers but if you pretend to take them seriously for 5 minutes you may surprise the hell out of them and get a tip. And even better, if they are wrong about the route they can unintentionally add to your pay.

I love how stubborn and insistent backseat drivers are – they illustrate human weaknesses so well. Paranoia, arrogance, controlling behavior, persistence, lack of empathy – it’s all on display. Indulge them and take their money, trust me.

When I get a back seat driver telling me to turn as I turn, I like to point at my app and say

"Yeah, the app tells me right here (tapping the screen)" Then I watch them boil in the rear view mirror and pick an exit or a turn to miss....

"I thought the app told you to turn."

"Oh, I'm sorry. Uber tells us to defer to the rider's preference. As customer service feature, I was waiting for your instructions."

Backseat drivers don't tip and they usually 1-star, so why not earn the 1-star?

4.55 if I remember correctly.

Ratings are overrated.
If I remember right, I picked up a 4.25 once because it was extremely slow. Picked up at a decent hotel. Needed to stop at a Walmart, said it would take 2 minutes. It actually did only take 2 minutes. Gave me a $5 for waiting, then off to the airport. Got her there and before I even got her bags out, she handed me a $10.

Sometimes you just can't tell.

wow. i'm all for path of least resistance. If pax wants to go a certain way, I'm all for it. It's their ride, their dime. Yes yes it's my time but we are talking slivers of time here not hours going in the wrong direction, yeah?
If it makes them happy, even if it isn't the right way so bleepin what. Could there be a tip lurking in there if you do as the pax wants? Percentages aren't good for that. But it would be path of least resistance and maybe 5 stars.
If I wanted drama, I'd go back to 60+ hours a week career. Driving is easy compared.

I’m fine with backseat driving. Normally it takes more distance and time than the one GPS shows, meaning more $.
also as soon as they do the backseat driving I completely ignore the GPS, so if they don’t tell me where to turn (if they are busy on the phone or something....) I just keep driving straight and so they miss their turn. It’s kinda satisfying for me lol

I love when you make 15 moves to get to a location an as you turn into the development they feel the need to say turn right/left at X street

4.43, is that an actual human being or did you pick up a calculator with that number showing on the screen?
Ratings are a double standard and bullcrap I've had low 4 riders and they were fine...and I've had high 4's and they were jerks..either way....the number of rides they have should be considered....If a rider has 100+ trips and is a low 4 there's a pattern of behavior...but the real issue is...why can they ride with a 4.3...but I can't drive?

Sounds like you had a disposition toward a lower rated rider.

If she was a 4.9, you wouldn't even comment that she was odd looking.
If she was a 4.9, you wouldn't make a big deal that she asked if you were her driver on a deserted street.

She goes to a destination regularly and you admittedly take way #2?
She likely knew there are other ways to point B, but was wondering why a "stupid, ignorant, supreme expert" driver would not choose way #1.

This whole ordeal was on YOU, and you showed your prejudice, spite and pettiness by 1 starring her.

You need to put the Christ back in Xmas in your life.
"For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you." -Matthew 7:2

4.43 rating is a dealbreaker because for the most part other drivers who are alerting you pax is a piece of work.
absolutely, you know ahead of time you have a "special" passenger.

About 2 months ago I got one of those, a 4.43.
I started the fun by asking him about his location, he said he was in the parking lot of Dennys.
Then he calls me to find out how long before I arrive, told him 2 minutes.
It was 3 people so I have all 3 sit in the back. It was one female & 2 males, all 3 from South Africa. She sat in the middle, felt uncomfortable. I asked her if she wanted the front seat like she wanted from the start, she said she was fine.
Then it was my turn to pick on Mr. 4.43.
The Indian looking man explained the Ubers in South Africa are horrible: smelly, dirty, nasty, etc.
I told him I was wandering because he seemed to be a very nice person. Told him "welcome to America".
Then he fell asleep, we arrived at the destination and told them good night. I asked the woman if the middle seat had been ok, she said yes. Then I told her "plus you got to know your colleagues better". They all laughed...

Moral of the story: have a good time when carrying a low score, and be completely IN CONTROL when carrying a low score.

Some people are rated low because of drivers who have to have everything exactly their way and expect the passengers to stroke their egos. I have never looked at a passenger's rating - I don't even know how to do so!

Had a middle-aged businessman backseat-drive from the get-go yesterday. It really irritated me for about 30 seconds, until I decided it didn't. I don't give a sh!t which way we go, dude. Turns out he was right - his way shaved a good 5 minutes off a 20-minute ride because he knew a better route through rush hour in his neighborhood. And I got to pick up another passenger right away in a surging area. Win-win.

Same. As long as people are not obnoxious and just normal/human they get a 5 from me. I picked up a 4.5 recently and wondered what her deal was. She was totally quiet and fine, but she had a mechanical gate thing that was a bit finicky leading to her house. I immediately suspected that to be the culprit. But shit, I'm not downrating a pax because of a gate no matter how trendy it might be.

even a broken clock is right twice a day haha

my experience on low ratings is not only are they trouble in most cases, they are working extra hard to be a pain in the ass. occassionaly, you get a person who buys a lot of ubers for friends and its the friends who screw up their ratings with late night shennaigans.

You shouldn’t even took the ride, sounds like the attitude beings with you. I’ve taken rides w 3.xx and ratings and still had no problems. My rider rating is 4.4. I use to take Uber $10 away everyday and gave $5 cash tip all the time and I didn’t talk. So I figure I’m 4.4 because I do take a few minutes to come down. If drivers 1 star because customer takes a few minutes than you can’t rely on ratings anymore

Dear lord say something else that makes you sound ignorant

Yeah that's probably it... order your ride when your ready. Not when your wiping your ass and shaving .. toes to the curb... Its not like you knew I was coming for 8-10 minutes... Oh wait you did...

That's my MO as well.

"Absolutely, no problem, of course, what a good idea"......etc. I love being a manipulative sociopath.
As you enter the lake....

Surge > Ratings. High enough Surge I don't even look at ratings.

I do a lot of airport trips. A lot of people from NYC have low ratings but were fine, no attitude and good tippers. I'm wondering if NYC drivers downrate more than other areas.
I created a new rider account just for NYC. By the time I had enough ratings to actually display one I was 4.62. All my rides were fine no complications, toes to the curb, but in all of them I tipped in the app afterwards. I can only assume that if you don't cash tip a NYC driver they are 1 starring.

Gave me a new appreciation to lower rated riders when I'm driving - may not be a behavior problem at all, just spent time in NYC and got ratings destroyed.
