Haha. I read the budget and was like - wait what! WTF. Rideshare tax?!

Newark tried to strongarm Uber for license fees and background checks like cabbies so Uber said - no, we'll just leave the market. Newark decided on a general license fee, $1 million a year for 10 yrs. I don't see that happening on the tax side.

We'll see.

Boston pols are noticing a decrease in the use of public transportation as pax flock to ridesharing, so they have started the discussion of increasing the $.20 fee presently included in each fare, to a much larger number, to keep public transportation funding whoole...

If there is an “FUber tax,” maybe it will be $0.50 a ride or something minimal. FUber doesn’t get that, and ur won’t affect drivers pay, one way or another. It’s just more money going to the state government so they can piss it away faster than they can collect it.

I believe that if they wanted to leave, they can, and it will not hurt their bottom line. Now, it's highly likely that drivers will get screwed, but how bad, we'll just have to wait and see.

Now, remember - Uber, is a Technology Company. That is why they are able to circumnavigate a lot of laws that were put in place to protect the average worker. And for the government to come in and say you guys will have to collect sales tax and have them treat it like a brick and mortar store is a very slippery slope. In other words think of it as collecting tax from the internet.

Sales taxes fund government, projects, and protections for workers, but it will not apply to an Uber driver because he/she works for a Technology Company and is not afforded the same laws and regulations. Yet, we'll be required to collect it, if it passes.

Don’t they already collect tax in New York State? The fares up there are like 7-8% higher because they collect tax on them I think. It’ll be the same in NJ if the budget is approved this way.

So that means we will get better roads ??-- We already pay higher gas tax and the roads still suck! don't see many workers out there filling these fu**ing potholes-- I spend most of my time when I'm driving on the lookout for potholes- even on roads you pay to drive on suck!!-- bend over or move to Pennsylvania--

NYC is the number one market for Uber......and that spills over into north Jersey....there is no way Uber will pull out of Jersey....with NYC at one end and Phili on the other Jersey is safe.......
When it comes to money and negotiations, it's just standard to have one company/corporation play chicken with the other one and see who blinks first. NJ is between two NYC and PHILA, and the lawmakers should realize that as a tech company they are not bound by state lines. They can pull out if they choose too, because of unfair laws, taxes, etc.

If NJ makes a show of it and it goes through that means that other states will follow with their own 'money grab' legislature and the drivers will get screwed, as one member here noted.

Uber is already doing upfront pricing. The tax will just be included there. Stop overreacting. And more importantly, stop paying attention to what the pax paid. It only impacts you when it comes to tip. You know what rate you're driving for.
Uber and its' upfront pricing has nothing to do with what NJ is trying to do with it's budget. Tax that is proposed is for Uber, Lyft and Airbnb. Nobody is overreacting since I haven't noticed anyone replies in BOLD CAPS. :) And more importantly, no one pays attention to what the pax say. It only impacts your tip at the end of the trip - 'hey i'll tip you in the app'. Yeah, I'm still waiting for my tips to roll through. :) However, they can keep the tip if the rates are 1$ a mile and that is the rate that I'm driving for.

When the rideshare bill passed they got rid of the sales tax for all limo/car service companies in NJ. It wasn't fair to legit limo companies. Uber always circumvented the tax by calling their service "ridesharing". I hope they turn the tables and tax ridesharing but not limo services.
