Hey guys, I'm a Triangle-based driver but thought I'd share this with y'all too since it's statewide.

Long story short - The House and Senate have passed the Passenger Protection Act - Governor Cooper hasn't signed it yet, but considering this was passed in both houses with no "Nays" likely means it's a fait accompli. The law:
  • Requires us to display the license plate number of our vehicle in a location that is visible from the front of the vehicle at all times we're driving rideshare and it must be "in a legible and contrasting font no smaller than three inches in height" although it doesn't have to be permanently affixed
  • Display a lit sign with the company name and logo we're operating for
  • Makes impersonating a rideshare driver a crime (a Class H felony (punishable by 4-25 months in prison, equivalent to First Degree Forgery) if it's during the commission of another crime, otherwise it's a Class 2 misdemeanor (up to 60 days in prison and a $1,000 fine, equivalent to carrying a gun without a permit)
We have until October 1st to display the front license plate and if we don't have them up starting December 1st, we can face a $250 fine. The lit sign requirement goes into effect on July 1, 2020 and the sign *must* be provided to us by the rideshare company.

The full bill is available to read at https://www.ncleg.gov/Sessions/2019/Bills/House/PDF/H391v7.pdf.
