Miami vs Anchorage

Hello forum,

I just started driving in Miami, and can’t believe how little I get paid. Rides for less than $4, even long rides, like 20 miles for around $21, and most people don’t tip. My car is newer and very clean and comfortable. I am polite and professional.

In summer 2021, I drove in Anchorage, AK, and I remember my pay being about twice as much. I’d work 10-12 hours and be disappointed if I made less than $400 for the day

Today, I worked 6 hours, pretty non-stop, and got paid $108, no tips. I spent around $25 on gas and also tolls. So I made around $75, less than $13 an hour. That doesn’t include vehicle cost, insurance. I should have made at least $200

Maybe Alaska was an anomaly. Pandemic, rental car shortage, fewer drivers. I suspect Miami has a lot of drivers. Maybe Uber sees that and can get away with paying less?

I feel like I’m providing a public service, rather than a for-profit service. Maybe I will try up in Fort Lauderdale and north from there. But I think I’ll give up on Miami. I spent like three hours just stuck in traffic jams the other day. It sucks.

I’ll travel to another state if I know the pay is better. Does anyone have any feedback on all this? Thanks and good luck to us all.

Yes, I believe there is an excess supply of drivers. I turned off UberX. Just working UberXL and Comfort now. Too depressing seeing all the $3-4 rides for 20 minutes of driving in traffic.

I drove taxi in Miami in 2008-2009. The fares were twice as much as they are now. MIA to South Beach was $32 flat rate, usually a $5 tip. Now They don’t even tip. Drivers are being exploited.

Florida is the worst region in the english speaking world for actually making money doing this. Prior to the flat rate garbage the base rates for everywhere in florida were consistently the worst in the english speaking world.

It just sucks.. that's all there is to it.

Uber set the rates too low to be able to make anything and there's nothing we can do to change it. Sorry but that's all there is to it.

Up in Orlando I get about as much in tips per ride driving SOMEONE ELSES CAR as uberX drivers GET PAID for the same trips.

And taxi rates in the City Beautiful just went up this week. The taxis got the order that we can get our meters updated with the new pricing tomarrow. So it's official.

Driving uber doesn't work in this state. Just give up and go do something else... literally anything else.

Didn’t take long to figure out that it’s better north of Ft Lauderdale. Much less traffic. But I did end up driving to Anchorage. Uber’d there for two weeks before starting a new oilfield job, 2 weeks on/ 2 off schedule. Will drive Uber on my two weeks off for the summer season in Alaska. Hopefully it will be as good as it was two years ago. It’s definitely less stressful. I keep all my stuff in the stow n go compartments in the floor of my Pacifica, air mattress, bedding and pillows go in the back bin, then covered…pax luggage goes right on top. So I sleep in the car at night and drive in the day. Housing is a waste of money if you don’t have much. Only way to save. Good luck everyone.
