Even with tips it's almost always not enough and unfortunately a lot of drivers are stuck in a hole they can't financially dig their way out of.

Most are just waiting for some major life changing event that drastically alter their situation.

For me it was the sudden attack by cancer, likely aggravated by almost 92,250 miles a year for 4.5 years I did for the company just trying to stay alive thinking if I just could do more I would finally make it and buy a brand new van.

Well I made it alright, got the van, two months later permanently disabled with a crap bag on my stomach I have to change every two days a long with a hot shower.

I don't go out much anymore, I'm on a very specialized diet and pretty much confined to my bed close to the bathroom which I use about 20 times a day, 24 hours a day, because I lack a functional colon.

The crap bag fills up a little, I gotta go dump it.

Uber did this to me, allowing me to kill myself. I also did it to myself and perhaps the cancer too. I thought I was Superman or something.

So you might be getting a cheap price, even with a tip, but your hurting drivers trying to stay alive unaware of their costs and you don't even know it.

That's why drivers are not smiling, only the ignorant newbies do that thinking they are going to be rich off this crappy gig work like I did.

I don't smile because I don't want to invite conversation. I wasn't always this way when I started but after doing this for awhile you realize that entertaining someone in the back seat while driving increases your risk of having an accident by a large margin. Most of your drivers are probably part of this forum. A lot of negativity here.

 

Sure, there's lots of negativity here. There's a lot of positive, too. For example, it was through this site that I found out about a class action against Uber. I checked with the people at the address I used to live and, sure enough, there was a decent check there for me.

It also can be a good place to get good info from other drivers. I found out here about the unlimited destination hack on Uber, for example, which was good while it lasted.

It's also a great place for the "post-your-boast" posters who like to post screenshots of exact ride locations, times and ride amounts. I have found a few good honey holes this way. Once a guy posted his favorite weekend spot, I tried it the next weekend and picked up a decent long-distance $270 trip.

Lots of other useful info on here, too, although less than previously, to be sure. So, it's a mixture of positive and negative, albeit with a probable focus towards the negative.

You all smiling at 5 bucks an hour? Yes in reality drivers make 5 bucks an hour if you take most rides unless you get giant surges.

 

That's because Uber pay is so low it's more like the driver is being billed instead of being paid. Wouldn't you be grumpy if you got billed to give a ride?
