Hi guys,

I want to become a part-time Uber driver. I have not signed-up yet, just have a question regarding DA.

Since It takes few weeks for DA application to be processed. What would you suggest?
  • First, apply and get DA and then sign-up for Uber OR
  • Sign-up for Uber first (DA is not a requirement). Apply and get DA later.
Looking forward to your responses.

Thanks in advance.

How much is the DA? If uber pushes it, they'll lose many hobby drivers. They want to flood the road with max cars. Driver turnover is large so they cannot rely on just the few with DA. That's how I see it.

On a different topic, scanning down the Australian cities, I noticed there's no uber in Darwin. Wonder why.

I don't understand why the compliance officers aren't fining for lack of drivers accreditation ect. Makes no sense that drivers like me have made the effort to do what we can to be legal and now we are in a worse position than people who haven't.
Driver accreditation is one thing but operator accredition is another. Without the proper safety inspections and lack of insurance is putting the drivers and public at risk

My point is that they were threatening fines of up to $15k if you were caught without any of the accreditations or checks etc. I've done everything required, except for the operator accreditation obviously, and yet they only seem to be fining for lack of operator accreditation and I'm now at a disadvantage to people who haven't bothered to do any of it.

I'd recommend starting the process for DA regardless of what you decide to do with your uber sign up. The DCSI check can take up to 3 months depending on how busy they are and if you have a common name. Why not go for your SP license - that way you'd be fully accredited to do any other chauffuer work and it's a skill/qualification you have for life and can use outside of uber (country taxi, classic car for weddings, uber black, limo or 12-seater minibus etc). The whole process took me around 4-5 months and cost under $500 (though you could probably claim it back as a training/education expense).

Uber does not currently operate in Darwin but the new Chief Minister Michael Gunner is supportive.

Once the regulatory issues in South Australia get sorted out; once the Victorian Parliament enacts the legalisation Bill currently before it; and once the Northern Territory gets itself in gear, rideshare will be legal in all eight states and territories.

That surely can't be far off now.

How often do you get pulled over by RBTs and if you are pulled over do they bother to test you?
In the last 18 months have been been pulled over for RBT 3 or 4 times but never tested.
In Adelaide driving the cab maybe once a year. I'm not driving nights though. I think maybe before Christmas early on a Sunday morning was the last time and I don't remember before that. Never been drug tested guess there's a cost factor there and they profile drivers?

Apologies for bringing up an old thread. I've searched through the forums but unable to locate the information I am after.

What is the last date you need to have Driver Accreditation (DA) to continue to drive for Uber?

I'm asking as I can't proceed with my Driver Accreditation as my name on my DCSI and passport are different and have to get the passport to reflect my name correctly (Passport as my first name as my middle name, and my middle name as my first, whereas everything else is correct - drivers licence, bank cards, healthcare card, bank statements).

In order to correct this, I have to apply for a Change of Name Certificate as well as get a new passport (it expires at the end of this month, so no biggie).

I already have my Screening, Certificate of Fitness and Certificate of Currency. Hoping to get away with not having an Inspection as I have a letter that doesn't mention the need for one to get a DA.

The extra processes I need to go through is going to cost me time and money, two of which I don't have right now, and I'm weighing up if driving for Uber is worth it in the short term, even though I only drive 2 nights a week.

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

tl:dr: when do I need to have DA to continue to drive for Uber.

According to the discussion I had with staff at Richmond the other day, you need an accreditation now. you also need your car inspected

It doesn't look like Uber are going to tell anyone when they are going to block non compliant drivers it may be just a matter of compliance officers informing non compliant drivers of new penalties. Try stopping in at Grote St that may be the only way you can at least know if there has at least been any kind of effort to inform drivers. Surely someone there should know something.

Make that 151. Finally sorted my accreditation yesterday and judging by my 2 hrs wait at the DLC yesterday, there's many more to follow.

Sadly there were totally clueless applicants. I witnessed one gent approach the desk hand over his drivers licence and asked for his licence to be upgraded to uber!!!

Keep smiling
Nah uber tell nothing of the process

Just In!
From Uber via their emails

Book your Government-accredited vehicle inspection before September 30 to stay on the Uber app.

We have an important update for you on vehicle inspection requirements. In accordance with South Australian passenger transport requirements, you will need to have your vehicle inspected by a Government-accredited vehicle inspector and obtain an inspection sticker.

To help you ensure this is a smooth process, our team has been working hard to make this as easy as possible for you.

Step 1) Book your inspection
If you book your inspection with Rightway Automotive before 30 September 2017 it will be free of charge and you will stay on the Uber app.

Step 2) Once your vehicle is inspected
Visit the Accreditation and Licensing Centre to have your inspection verified and confirm your vehicle's CTP insurance class.

At the Accreditation and Licensing Centre (ALC), you will be asked to confirm your vehicle's CTP class as 'small public passenger vehicle'. Registering your vehicle in this CTP class costs an additional $330 per year, which works out to less than $7 per week. You will also need to bring to the ALC a certificate of currency for your car insurance policy, and your inspection report.

Step 3) Collect your sticker from the inspection provider
Once your inspection is verified by the ALC, you can return to the inspection provider to collect your inspection sticker.

If you have any questions, visit the Uber Greenlight Hub where one of our Uber Experts will be able to help.

I emailed them asking about this. They initially said that since my inspection was over 30 days ago they couldn't accept it. (it was 33 days) After some to-and-fro, they decided to accept my RAA Inspection. I think the misunderstanding arose because some minion was following the script and not using the brain.
I had my RAA inspection done on the same day that I attended the accreditation centre. The man at the accreditation centre said that he couldn't accredit me until my police check was completed. I will be very annoyed if the police check takes so long that my RAA inspection expires.
