I'm tired. I'm just throwing these together on the fly. I have a rental. I get a nearly a hundred dollars in toll charges a week. Am I missing something? Am I getting reimbursed for those in the fare? Or am I wasting money taking the toll to do anything pickup or is that just the nature of the beast? Please explain. The rental third party bill is making me concerned.

We have an electronic system for tolls here
A transponder is purchased w credits on it
The rental company may be charging you
double for All the tolls.
It's called iPass here. Find out now.
Make sure to deregister it when you return the car

Well it says I can fold up the toll tag if I don't want to use it. Do you think I do that for when I'm driving personally?

What do you mean transponder? So I don't need to have a toll tag like theirs in the car? How am I charged? Or who is charged? I'm in the DFW Metroplex.

I can't get anything to foot between the toll charges and the trip fare breakdown. It looks like I just get reimbursed from the time of pickup, so I don't necessarily need to use the tollway to get there. It just becomes a matter of time versus expense it looks like.

I use Waze. I guess I could use Uber to verify a little too.

We are charged toll here electronically by the liscense plate on the car. If your system works the same way you might only have $50 in tolls but the rental place charges you 2x the price because you are using the unit in the car instead of using your own. You dont get paid anything till you pick up
If you dont have to use a tollway and it's not significantly faster you sure dont wanna be
paying 2x the toll price out of your pocket.
We just goto a grocery store and
get a unit like the picture.
Give em your credit card to charge and refill it
When you return the car take it with you
Then when you have a new liscense plate reregister
You are gonna need to google texas tollway system to figure out how/what happens there

Wow! Ty!

I'll look into that technique. I'll check the Kroger near me for the Ipass.

I follow on the strategy going there.

I can just close their toll tag to stop using it, when I get the prepaid one.

How do you know when to refill? Do you just do it once a week, if you're driving pretty consistently?

You keep calling it a tag. I dont know how your system works I'm just telling you how our system works an what rental car companies do here.
They might not be charging you 2x but
if they are you need your own tag.
And remove it from the car when you return it or
they will keep charging you for all the tolls

Good to know.

Oh, is that mileage a tax deduction on a rental vehicle?
No mileage deduction on rentals vehicles.
You need to get your own car
the rental will eat you alive
That write off will way more pay for the car too
I wrote off 65k miles at .58 a mile last year.
That's twice as much money that I dont have
to pay taxes on than the cost of the entire car
Texas isnt one of the places known to provide
good livings for drivers I dont think though
You really wanna be sure you want to do this
and have a backup plan too in case something happens and you get deactivated..

You know I wonder about getting a toll tag and putting it on there. I think it might save me $5-$10 with their service me. They might not like it, but whatevs. They want their cut. They want you to go through them if you want Sirius XM, too.

Jesus dude.
Cut your expenses as low as you can.
Any money that you are spending you dont keep.
I'm getting 32mpg out of a gas car and havent had to put brakes yet on my 110k mile corolla
They dont get any freebies and
All get chatted up for tips
One of my happiest rides was a
$5 tip from a flight attendant LOL

Okay. I like the airline industry people too. It sounds like this is a fine whatever works for you within the parameters of what you can do kind of job. I'll look up and see if I can get a toll tag on my own.

I looked on the TripAdvisor thread. I don't think I can put my own toll tag on there because they will only give me a toll tag for a car that is registered in my name. I do have a motorcycle so I could put that on there and maybe use it.

Check the Dallas Board:

They'd know for sure

I just did $50 prepaid on my credit card. I checked and it works all over Texas. I hope this helps with the airport because I was having to stop and use my debit card every time even with the rental car companies TollTag. It was a real headache. I just have to watch if I change rental cars to change the vehicle and plate etc.

I could renew it at 10 or 20 or 100 and then it resets at $10.

I'm just going to go a couple of weeks and fine-tune it from there.

This is the most commonly used Toll Tag for DFW drivers. It works at DFW airport too. It will require a $40.00 initial deposit and it will auto refill once you get close to using up the current money on it.

I don't do pickups if there is a Toll charge involved in getting to the pax. Those trips either don't get accepted or I cancel them. If I can get there using the side road then it is fine.

Do not follow any GPS that tries to take you on the Express Lanes as neither Uber of Lyft charge the pax for that extra service. You will be pretty much doing the ride for free if you partake in this. If the pax wants to take the Express Lanes I require cash up front or I refuse to do it. Don't trust them if they say they will take care of it on the app.
