Can speed bumps actually damage suspension?

I'm seeing a lot of cab drivers fly up Audrie at probably >25 MPH, and I'm wondering if the vehicle's suspension can actually handle it? Those are some of the worst speed bumps I'm aware of.

Exactly. It's the same principle as ripping off the band-aid. All the pain all at once.

Really though, suspension is usually slowly worn out rather than outright damaged by speedbumps, potholes and other road irregularities. But by all means, if you hit something extra hard, extra fast, you can definitely do pre-mature damage or accelerate the wear of shocks, bushings and various joints.

I've done all my own suspension work in the past and have only had "maintenance" level work - usually starting at 150K miles or so with things like ball joints and stabilizer bar links. Probably my best advice would be to stick to OEM parts. I've found that some of the cheapo stuff on RockAuto wears out quickly whereas OEM (at least in the case of Toyota/Lexus) is far superior in terms of quality and longevity.

Even in the cases where you have a mechanic do it, I'd insist on OEM, assuming your car is from a quality manufacturer. Aftermarket suspension parts can also become noisy sooner, even if they're not worn out.

I work for the largest one - they never mentioned it in training. If they want to nab me for my driving style, I guess it wasn’t meant to be. I drive safely, and legally around other cars. But yeah - since it’s not my car I’ll fly over speed bumps without pax and if it’s safe to do. (Likely like 25+, but definitely not 5 mph)

Drive It like you stole it!

There’s a reason people don’t recommend buying rental cars. People beat them up.

Taxis aren’t owned by the driver, and to my knowledge no drivers are responsible for maintenance of the taxi they drive (they may be responsible for fuel depending on the company/arrangement).

When I drive taxi and don’t have a pax in the car, I don’t slow down for speed bumps much either (enough for safety, but not necessarily a gentle ride). I drive conservatively with pax in the car, though.
