Since Shuddle imploded mid-April, a lot of those rides for unaccompanied minors are going to Zūm, a San Mateo startup. Zum needs drivers all over the SFBay, especially Peninsula and South Bay, and are offering a $100 signup bonus after 10 rides, plus another $100 after 50 (only if you use a signup code). Not a bad option for weekday afternoons -- many former Shuddle drivers are doing Zum now (many women).

There's also a childcare component with Zum (not just driving), so drivers need childcare experience (or experience working with kids), 2008 or newer car, CA driver's license, & valid work permit. They do Trustline certification & background check, so be prepared to be fingerprinted.

New drivers using a code to sign up get a bonus of $100 after giving 10 rides, plus an additional $100 after 50 (mention code in phone interview). Look on Facebook or Twitter for codes, use any code that ends in "100". Apply at: https://ridezum.com/drive.html

1) Shuddle shut down. What makes Zum more viable?

2) They're looking for female drivers, that seems like a gender based discrimination law suit waiting to happen.

3) I didn't see what they charge / pay per mile on their website? Why not be upfront with pricing instead of trying to hide it?

That's just shady...

Hi Ace,

Shuddle did kid rides only, but Zum does kid rides & *childcare* -- so there's something to fill in the 9-3 hours that Shuddle didn't do. Also, Zum gives rides to kids 5 & up (drivers have booster seats), whereas Shuddle's minimum age was 8 (or old enough to ride without a booster seat in California). Larger market, more varied services... and lower burn rate. Zum says they're already profitable, which was something evidently Shuddle always struggled with (and eventually lost). There's a good article on Pando that breaks down why Shuddle's implosion was the fault of the company itself, and not the funding environment.

Zum is pretty new, so I don't know if they have any kind of official policy about the gender of its drivers. The important thing is childcare experience. If a guy has that, he can apply too. Zum really went the extra mile in helping the suddenly-unemployed Shuddle drivers to smoothly transition over if they were interested. Shuddle's drivers were mostly women, so it is what it is. (Thanks, Shuddle, for that whole 24-hour notice to all drivers & customers!!! I used to drive for Shuddle -- within an hour of their announcement they then suddenly nuked their driver FB group without warning, and sold all of their lists to some L.A. outfit. Still don't know if detailed children's private information was included in that sale -- L.A. guys are being tight-lipped about it.)

I do think Zum should update its website with clearer pricing information -- point taken. As far as the driver's take goes, the minimum payout to the driver per ride is $16, with more according to time and distance. If a ride runs over its estimate, the overage rate is $6 per 15-minute block of time for either driving or childcare (so $24/hour). Many rides hover around the $20 mark, with some more like $16, other much higher depending on how far/long it'll take. There was an article in today's Los Altos Town Crier about Zum that says the same things about price, so you can double-check. Drivers are able to see the price estimate before accepting/declining an assigned ride -- they get the entire amount of the estimate, and more if things run long.
