I just lost out on a $$ ride(50%+) from Edison,NJ to LaGuardia because the pax didnt have a car seat for his 4 YEAR OLD KID. I told him he has to have one its Lyft policy and the LAW. He has the balls to tell me that "it shouldnt matter to you as long as I hold onto him, other Lyft drivers never give me a problem. Just put my luggage in the back."

When I refused him again and told him to cancel as I'm rolling up my window he says "I'm going to call Lyft....."

You should have responded with "Ok, when you're on the phone with Lyft I'll be on the phone with Child Protective Services. Have a nice day."

You did the right thing. A $150 fare is not worth a child's life. Anything can happen beyond your control, a blown tire, another vehicle's driver having a medical seizure, a trailer disengaging from a vehicle etc. Not only would a child's death be on your conscience, but you would open yourself up to a huge wrongful death lawsuit. As a business owner you are held to a higher liability than the general public.

I've had only 1 pax do this but sheesh...people are so irresponsible. They also claimed other drivers let them.

Every day there is some parent on the news who leaves their kid in the car, abandoned at home, abused or something.

If drivers would stop taking them they would stop doing it.

Eight here, and each one had the same excuses. "Oh it's not that far, other drivers are okay with it," People should seriously need ronhave a government given test to pass to be allowed to breed.

You did the right thing. I had a mother yelled at me for not taking her and her kid, I just laughed.

And last week..check this out. I picked up a couple that had an infant..an INFANT!! I swear I thought it was a stuff toy wrap in blanket and the way he was carrying the baby. I started moving then I heard a noise...WTF!!! It was the baby..I pulled over and kicked them out. .

His excuse was..the other driver didnt have problem taking them before..who the pak in the right mind would take their infant in a car without a car seat.

Of course, I reported them to Lyft.

Some drivers do it, also some riders just BS and say that. The drivers who do take those rides are usually the same ones who are afraid to say no and let anything go in their car. They also take the 4.3 rated drivers on Pool rides from the grocery store (cart full of groceries, mom, and 4 small children with no child seats), and drive 25 minutes for a pickup.

That sucks . Usually the long rides are more responsible and better prepared .
The fact is that within 10 minutes somebody came in behind you and took them . Probably commiserated with them about how you are an A hole for not taking them .
These passengers know they will get a ride . They feel as if you have some nerve for inconveniencing them . The safety of their child is among the last things on their mind .
Both companies do nothing to fix this situation .

It's not a matter of if but when there's an accident and a kid goes flying through the windshield. Then the parents will be suing Uber for not protecting their child, and the driver will be slaughtered in court.

I just had some kids today that were trying to sit in a single seat unbuckled. I had to tell the kids to move and buckle up. The kids don't argue, they know better, but the parents didnt say a peep. Parents just don't care until something happens and then it's always someone else's fault.

That is not true, at least in Tennessee. That exemption only pertains to taxis. Ride Share are not considered "For Hire" in that regard.
All I know is this is what I got from a study that was done here in Texas. It is correct as far as Texas laws go.

I have a link to it but didn't post it as it's a *PDF download link.

My day went better today. Only one ride with a child, and Mom was standing outside the store, in the rain, little girl in one arm, bags in the other and car seat on the ground next to her. I helped them get settled and took off my long sleeve shirt(yes I had a tshirt underneath you weirdos lol)and used it as a car seat cover so the girl didnt get totally soaked. Used my umbrella to walk them to the door carrying her bag.
Those are the parents that deserve praise and she got it from me.
I of course had to listen to her story the whole way to the dest of how her "wonderful" husband decided to go out w the boys instead of helping her shop which he agreed to do, but I didn't mind.

Yeah it's not clear here either, but the local news did do an "investigation" into it and there it appears that only taxis are exempt.

Law also states if the child's parent or guardian is present in the car that they will be liable and receive a ticket, but it does not necesssarily absolve the driver.

I'm not going to be the one who challenges the law though. Like you stated earlier regardless of what the law may say, the right thing to do is for the parent to have a car seat or cancel the ride if they don't.
