as soon as you pick up the food start the app and see how far away they are.

add like 2 minutes to the GPS estimate.

then text customer,,,,Hi, it Dave from uber, I just picked up your food from --name of restaurant---and should be there in " GPS estimate,,,plus 2 minutes"

customers love it and usually have cash tip waiting

and if you get the chance tell the customer the food is still hot cause you had to wait 10 minutes for it to come out,,,then they usually tip more.

I do that already, and I can't say I've gotten noticeable increase in tips. I can't say it's had any negative impact either, and I have noticed an increase in customers coming out to meet me/already waiiting..or will text instructions they didn't put in app...also makes it easier to ask tourists in hotels to meet me at the lobby lol so yeah I still do it for those reasons if nothing else.

The #1 method for getting tips has never changed: if you want lots of tips then you need to deliver in white, working-class neighborhoods.
That is a terrible stereotype and not always the case but usually accurate. But it has nothing to do with race. Most people in their neighborhoods have a tight budget and if they can get food delivered at the cheapest way possible, they will do it. That includes intentionally not tipping.

It is really about mindset. Tippers are givers who understand that in order to receive back out of life, be it related to a career or learned skill or relationship, you need to give into and invest into these things. Those who work hard are usually selling out to a higher cause, such as their family or some career goal or whatever. They understand the laws of return and giving and receiving.

It seems hit or miss for me when I send the message. Sometimes I’ll get nice tips and sometimes I won’t get any.

I’ll agree with what someone said above- the customers seem to come outside more often to meet

Dumb. Customer is alerted once you pickup and has estimated time for arrival based off GPS and traffic.
This.

I used to do what OP did, I used to write a lot more detailed messages to the customer hoping for better ratings and tips .

Example of a template I had

"Hey ! My name is phaggotbrah. I just picked up your order and will be arriving at your destination in X minutes. If you are happy with my service then please give me a thumbs up when you rate the driver on the app - it helps me to keep delivering food to awesome customers like you. have a wonderful day"

I had something like this ^ I even gave out free water bottles (see my thread here https://uberpeople.net/threads/went-from-78-rating-to-up-91-doing-2-new-things.255013/)

It only resulted in increase ratings.

The only tip I have ever gotten is a $20 cash tip from an elderly woman. From over 300 or so deliveries..just 1 person had the courtesy to tip.

It has a lot to do with where I live (Australia)

It has to do with the type of customer fübr placates.

I can tell you that I delivered food for 2 yrs in college and I never got stiffed. There was once a time when a customer tried to get his tip back but that is another story altogether.

You don't know how many Eats deliveries I've done where you have to find parking at a restaurant, then find parking at the residential building, then check in with security, then go all the way up to deliver the item , then boom nothing.
