XL only pickups at Sky Harbor.

I currently have my account setup so I can only receive XL requests if I choose. Am I able to do XL only pickups at Sky Harbor? Is there a completely different queue for it? If so, what's the average wait time for requests?

I did UberX there last night from 7-10pm. 6 rides = $78. Which seems pretty good, but I know I could do much better doing only XL.

You can do xl only but you will not get 6 trips in 3 hours you would be lucky to get 3.

That's fine with me. 3 XL trips could still potentially be more than 6 X trips if they're long.

I'll try XL for the first hour tonight. If it looks like it's one trip per hour, I'll go back to X/XL. It's the summer, no ones travelling here. I'm sure it will pickup in the fall.

I would like to know how many miles you drove for $78. I did a little rough math and to make $78 at 80 cents/mile is 97.5 miles then you deadhead back to the airport and deadhead home. So I figured you drove 200 miles for $78. If your cost to operate is at 25 cents/mile then for 200 miles your operating cost is $50. You actually made $28 in three hours.

Your driving a xl vehicle so your cost to operate might be 40 cents/mile. In this case you just lost $2 in three hours of work. My miles estimate and my cost estimate might be off but they're in the ball park. Something to think about.

Ok a current and relevant thread.

There are mainly 2 types of x/x l partners trying to do pick-ups at the port.
1- the excited fresh new partners Uber easily manipulates with bs lies and promises.
2- the seasoned partner to no fault of their own desperate to make ends meet cause they believed the bs lies and promises.

Airport pick-ups is a lose/lose proposition. And for that matter driving for Uber period with the lack of surges is a lose/lose deal.

I included tips in my earnings. $70 fare $8 tips. One trip was an 22mile XL trip for around $28+$4 tip. I don't know the exact milage I drove. It's written down at home. I used about a quarter tank of gas, about 5 gallons at $2.00 a gallon. I drive a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan that gets around 25mpg, so based on that, I'd say closers to 125 miles driven.

I just started airport runs last night. My normal shift is Fri/Sat 8pm-3am, which I'm trying to get away from. I'd like to shoot for Mon-Fri 7-10. It's one additional hour per week, with around the same amount of money.

Surge in the valley is a complete joke now, even on peak Saturday nights in Old Town at 2am only gets to around 2.5x. Working around surge times used to make sense, not to much anymore. I'm not trying to make a living doing this, just some side cash when I can.
I also take advantage of my 2 forward trips daily, and always set them for the airport. I stay logged in while driving back when they're set.

Good thing gas is your only expense.

Of course I have annual vehicle expenses. Brakes, Tires, Oil changes. But that's still under $1,500 a year.

All of them I write off my taxes at the end of the year anyways.

So you'll get that all back.
Not all, but most of it.
That's awesome.

Maybe I should start writing off my $40,000 worth of expenses every year. I could double my income. I should probably file amended returns for the past six years that I've been driving a cab, I could get a quarter million back.

I wonder if the IRS would print that check on the big paper like you see on TV when people win the lottery...

Why wouldn't you write off your expenses? It's allowed per the IRS!

I'm gonna do it!

I'll get reimbursed for my leases, fees, gas, car wash tokens, and air freshener! It'll be like having no expenses at all! 100% profit, just like every other business!

I'M GONNA BE A QUARTER-MILLIONAIRE!!!!
If you are writing of brakes, tires, oil change you are crazy. The only way you can do that is if you are writing off actual expenses which is not going to be near the tax deduction that mileage is. .55 cents a mile is the mileage deduction. Using mileage, if you are driving an average of 60 -70K miles a year that is a good $30,000 a year in deductions. I think there is actually an IRS reg that caps cabs at around $27,500 per year in depreciation deduction for mileage. Then you still deduct your insurance, cell phone, registration, loan interest, etc. and you never pay taxes in this business.

I saw you paid $12,000 for your vehicle. Using actual expenses depreciation f you depreciate that over 5 years that is about $2500 a year, plus oil changes, gas, maintenance. Even if you get double wammied on both an engine and transmission you are only looking at another $5000 spread over 5 years. Your accountant needs his head examined, and if you are the accountant you need to find one. The problem is that you have to make the selection in the first year so you are going to need to go back and amend your previous returns. If you are doing this part time and don't have another car you are not even allowed to do your taxes using this depreciation method anyway.
