Accepted an offer just now. Around $10 for 3 miles.

Got a message from the customer that they put in a different delivery address, because the restaurant doesn't deliver to their location (which was 5-6 miles further away). They're willing to either meet me at the address in the app or tip an extra $20 if I drive to their location.

I decided the amount was worth it. But obviously there was a possibility they wouldn't follow through with the tip.

Taking everything into account, I got the sense the customer was legit and decided to trust my gut, and roll the dice on it. Checked an hour after delivery and they'd increased the tip to $28. Which made it around $30 for 9 miles.

Anyway WWYD?

My main reasoning for doing it was as follows:

1.) The guy sounded legit and not pushy. And gave me the option to meet him at the original address.

2.) It was a rural/suburban area. IMO, scams are more likely in urban areas and cities with more anonymity. Less so in places where people are likely to get the same driver again at some point.

3.) I would have known his place of work. Of course, I wouldn't have done anything if he didn't pay up. But he doesn't know that.

4.) Gut feeling and intuition.

At the end of the day I accepted there was a chance of getting screwed. And fully understand the hesitation of others.

They actually sent the message before I picked up the order, so I had a half a mind to cancel it myself.

Some of my best “unicorn” deliveries had unusual circumstances that would have caused most drivers to cancel.

Last Easter I got a UE order for a huge dinner. UE only shows max of 8$ tip. I get there and it’s a mad house A line of cars at least a quarter mile long. The restaurant partnered with a church group to sell Easter dinners for charity. I park a block away and walk up.and they tell me I have to wait in the car line. Not gonna happen.

As a courtesy, I text the customer and tell him the situation and that I am going to cancel. He says please don’t cancel. I have a house full of hungry people. I already tipped $30 in the app. I will give you a cash tip as well.

Ok, so I get in line and it takes 35 minutes. I load up all these large platters of Easter food and make the delivery. I get there they start hauling the food inside and a guy thanks me and gives me $60.

So, a total of $93 for about an hour. On a delivery most drivers would of just canceled without texting the customer.

Good job on that hour and for being patient. I would have told them I'm not waiting and would have brought the food up myself. If they want to stop me, they can try.

I doubt I would have gambled on a total distance of 9 miles. “I’ll tip you extra” = famous last words.

Glad it worked out well for you.
