Why is there never a surge at TIA?

Does anyone know why there is never a surge at the airport? Is it because drivers are always hanging out near there or is there some other reason?

Commander you disappointed with that question...Think about the 3 areas of travel cost for most travelers.
#1...airline can be pricey depending when you book plus extra fees..#2...hotel rates are actually surge pricing
in its purest form...#3...transportation...overpriced taxi's and car rentals.

How would feel if you landed in an airport and was looking at 2.9 or 1.7 etc surge pricing?

I still salute you Commander!

Sorry to disappoint you, but I wasn't suggesting that there should be a surge at the airport, I was only wondering why there never was.

And your argument would make sense except that many of my trips TO the airport are surges, and no one seems to mind paying 1.5x-3.4x to get TO the airport.

And, as you said, Hotels use surge pricing, and Airlines do as well. So, Airline ticket: $500; Hotel: $200/night; Ground Transportation: $30. Why should a travelers lowest cost item be protected (if they are) when the two highest cost items are not?

But again, I was/am not advocating for a surge at the airport, I'm just wondering why there is never one.
Unfortunately the airports are protected from surge.
In the middle of a surge that covered the entire Tampa Bay Area and the airport last year, I responded to a request from the airport thinking it might be a surge. Being new, I didn't know better. To my disappointment I learned that airports never surge. Even if all surrounding areas are surging such as in new year or Halloween day.

Driving them there you will get surge "sometimes" do to supply and demand, but picking up in Airport is a different story, no reason for surges, and it's not allowed, period.

But there ARE surges at St. Petersburg-Clearwater International (PIE), so then what's up with that? Or does it just show as a surge but it isn't really?

I believe this was discussed in another thread way back and everyone had said airports do not surge. I have not yet heard they do. Maybe Clearwater airport is exception. We can ask partner support to clarify.
My guess, cause when in doubt head to an airport to get the fare. If the ammount of drivers exceeds the ammount of passengers at the airport 24/7 365 then no surge is needed.

Surges do not exist at the airports.
The fact that the airport attracts so many drivers really prevents the whole zone from surging most of the time, unless there is an event at Raymond James like the Bucs game tonight.

Has anyone here actually gotten a ping from the airport while the map was showing surge there? At one point tonight there were actually no drivers there at all, at a time when flights were still landing. I feel like in a situation like that, canceling the surge at the airport would make it impossible for pax find a ride because it removes driver incentive to to not skip.

Yes. I observed that happen more than once. All areas surrounding airport were surging. No car in airport and no surge. And I got non-surge airport pings while I was as far away as 3 miles.

Uber is not the only game in town, people still got Taxis before uber.

Not true. From USA Today:
In the second quarter of 2015, 31% of ground transportation receipts were from Uber, 24% from taxis, and 45% from rental cars.

Last year at the same time, Uber accounted for 8% of receipts, taxis 37% and rental cars 55%.

If you take rental cars out of the equation, Uber made up 55% of receipts vs. 43% for taxis in Q2 2015. Lyft and other rideshare services accounted for the rest of the expenses

And that is "receipts," not number of rides. Since Uber is generally half or more cheaper than a taxi, that means that FAR more people are using Uber than traditional taxis

Read my post that you quoted slowly. What I am trying to tell you, read slowly, BEFORE uber came to existence people still got around, if uber DISSAPEARS today, tomorrow people will still get a Taxi or black car FHV, Taxis will be more busy as well as FHV's, the numbers you posted mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, these numbers are AFTER the fact when uber came into existence.
