When do you start the trip?

3794 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  JustForSneaks07
I drive from time to time when i'm bored and need something to do. But I ride a lot more than I drive and I always trip my driver and im usually curb side unless the weather is a mess and I am usually at the door.

The other day I was in the lobby looking at my uber car coming to pick me up. He was still 2 minutes away, so I stayed in the lobby because it was raining. I get a text saying your uber driver has arrived but my uber app still says he is 2 minutes away. So I say what the heck and walk outside which is a couple feet away.

When I enter the car I noticed that the trip has already started. I never start trips before the pax enter the car. I couldn't even question him on it because he was a deaf driver. I don't feel the need to contact uber about some change but it does bring to ask a question.

When do you start your trip? When you reach the location? When Pax enter the car?

I start the trip when they enter the car so I can confirm where we are going.

You said you 'entered the car...and then noticed the trip had already started.' Yes, as soon as the pax touches the door handle to get in your car, the ride should start. So, once you are "IN" the car....then definitely 'the trip has already started'. What is confusing about this to you?

By the way....did you TIP your driver? Even if he/she started a WHOLE MINUTE early....it would have been PENNIES....not *some change!
I start the trip when they give me a destination or when they enter and give me a destination.

come in car complaining....cancel
no destination....cancel
can we do multiple stops ...cancel

cancel so they can't rate you and kick them to curb not worth the headache..they gonna learn today

I am saying usually when I enter the car you can see the driver start the trip. It was no tints on the car and he didnt reach for the phone on the holder so DUH that means the trip already started before I got in the car. Also isn't change pennies? Are you slow? Or you just cant follow?

I would have taken way more offense to @LEAFdrivers comments than Footnanking. I think Foot was trying to help you out and LEAF was being a smartass. HELLO!!
As a passenger I have noted on the passenger app that it will say "on a trip" or "trip in progress" . I noted this once as a passenger long before the driver picked me up , sure enough when I got in the car he had already started the ride. I cancelled that ride and complained to Uber because he had started that ride long before he picked me up- he was scamming the system. As a driver it is my preference not to start the trip until they are all safely tucked into their seatbelts, we have hashed out a general destination and I have a feel for the general attitude of the riders, all of which must meet my expectations before I start the trip. If anything comes up within that first 30-60 seconds that doesn't feel right, like extra passengers, stops at Taco Bell or a piss poor attitude then - I cancel the trip and ask them to exit my vehicle. Overall, I rarely have any issues, I pull up, pax get in, I get an address and I drive to destination. The End.

You are going to complain that a deaf driver possibly got .10 extra on your fare? Really? I notice how you evaded the 'Did you tip your driver' question. Yes, maybe they did 'start your trip' as soon as they saw you walking towards the car. I can't imagine being a deaf Uber driver. Maybe this way they had a few extra seconds to see your destination in case they needed to communicate with you. Wow. Chill.

I also prefer to do it this way. But I do not begrudge drivers who take the 'touch the door handle-ride has begun' method. Usually the only time I will begin trip as soon as they touch the door handle is when I have actually spoken to them on the phone beforehand...know where they are going AND already know they will be a cool pax. ;)

I start it once I'm sure I don't want to cancel. Generally that's once everyone is in and I'm sure rider # 5 and 6 are not about to appear or the pax act like idiots immediately.

However there is nothing wrong with starting a trip as the pax is getting in and he may have started it as he saw you walking up so that he could see the destination and not waste time getting moving.

He may have been waiting longer than you think. As a driver you should know the app lags all the time. Just because it didn't show his car there doesn't mean he wasn't.

If I ever found myself desperately needing an uber and had no cash to tip I would call the driver and tell him to start the trip on his way there and/or after the trip to put the bill up and make up a little for no tip. As a driver I don't see how at the low rates you can be upset about an extra few cents quite honestly.

I did, I click reply to the wrong person.
I start the trip when PAX is IN my car. Once started, I'll confirm the destination and ask if everyone is bucked up and ready to go.

This. It's not worth it to start the trip before you got the passenger actually in the car because if they don't show up and you already started, it's gonna be a mess & the passenger may complain to Uber and you'll get a warning.
