I got the email below today.

"Recent changes to uberPOOL

"These changes will make uberPOOL an even better experience for you. Because you still receive uberX time and distance rates for POOL trips, longer trips with multiple pickups mean higher earnings for you. This is part of many improvements we're making to uberPOOL, some of which you can read about below."

When did Stool change to UberX rates? I like the new timer and cancelation fee. I may try a few Stool rides to see if it's OK.

This would be an important change if it is true.
There is an easy way to tell if you got UberX rates or not. Accept a pool ride and check the waybill. If you got .24 a minute, you got UberX rates. If .13 a minute it is pool rates. I believe you could check this immediately after accepting the ride request. If the waybill says .13 a minute you could cancel the ride immediately.

I just accepted an Uberpool request, seconds ago. The waybill indicated Uberpool rates, not UberX rates. Will they change it for my account in two days, or the email to you is simply a flat-out lie, I don't know.

I cancelled the ride.

I will watch for further developments on this.

The above emailed paragraph about the rate was quickly deleted in second email from Uber titled "Oops, here's your corrected email with more improvements to the Uber partner app."

No rate change. Still the same.

Dont really understand all the excitement about the timer. he 2 minute cancellation fee/timer was always in play. This appears to be a blanket email from SF corporate office so this feature may not have been in all markets.

Poo. Still not worth my time, expense, or effort of helping socially awkward cheap-asses engage with others for 10 minutes.

..., it shows the power we hold. By refusing the trips we forced their hand...
We CAN have an effect on this crappy program if we're united in not accepting any poo-ping, ever. That means not accepting even when it's surging.

Unfortunately, the majority of X drivers out there are not on this forum and don't realize how little they are making or they are worried about their acceptance rate so they take every ping. And, there's enough drivers here who will do the same if the surge is high to make it worthwhile.

And that's enough acceptance for Uber.

I can't fault drivers for crossing the "picket line". It's tempting to take the money. Though I wish they could see that even accepting pool when it surges only helps uber to continue offering the program at the rates it has.

Uber does not exist without us. Nor does any crappy program they push onto us. Pax can request Pool all day long but no driver = no completed Pool ride.
So we do have the power.
And when we stand united we can use that power to effect the change we seek.

Is doing some pool rides when it surges really any different that doing pool rides to fulfill weekly trip guarantees?

What I found out is that this paragraph is straight out of the New York City Uber page. Apparently, in New York City, pool rates are the same as UberX rates. $1.75/mile and .35/minute. Among the best pool and UberX rates in the USA and not indicative of the horribly low rates found throughout the country.

Interesting, indeed. Yet begs the question, why? To reduce congestion? To help drivers earn more? Seems a little too environmentally conscious and altruistic for uber? Given their well-documented history of self-serving actions I'm inclined to regard such magnanimous gestures with skepticism.

Uber has two separate fares in car for part or most of trip. Driver gets paid for one for the whole trip. Uber could easily work this in their favor without screwing over drivers with lower rates.

Last week was my first, I didn't really discriminate on what I accepted. But after I sat down and looked at the numbers, I stopped taking pools last night. Since they're not worth my time. Driving 5 - 10 minutes to reach a fare of $1.32, is not a productive use of my time.

And seeing as how I'm paying for the vehicle and gas, and all that goes with it. I have no issue with refusing rides that I deem not worth my time.
