NY Times, 5/7/2018 in the opinion piece section?
NY'ers who can afford to avoid their dysfunctional subway system are spoiled for choice these days/ In addition to long established Taxis, livery cabs, black cars, and limos, they can summon rides through Uber,Lyft, juno,& Other apps,. while this new surfeit of options has been a boon to people trying to get around town, its also lay waste to livelihoods of taxi drivers and has turned NYC's already busy streets into glorified parking lots & leaders, Mayor de Blasio,Cuomo, albany and the council, have yet to come up with a idea to deal with these problems?
Story goes on to basically say we have too many cars on the road, when will some one do something about it?
They talk about Min wage> Fee;s on cars? cap cars?surcharges? Does the city owe taxi guys $$ for destroying/hurting $$ there industry? Many ideas on Op regarding exactly what to do about all this new stuff,So see what happens? JMO

NYC isn't broke. Politicians just want more revenue coming in so their pockets can be deeper while ensuring there's enough revenue for what the city required in terms of maintenance and programs
Politians arent broke....NYC is ....why is fhv getting an unpresident tax next to pay fo the mta....cuz nyc is broke and fhv is their last hope

The city should look in the mirror if it would like to see who's to blame for the congestion problem. All the Bus Lanes, Bike Lanes, and Camera Traps that didn't exist 20 years ago have done exponentially more to tie up traffic than the thousands more fhvs being on the road today. It's a big city and even if all 60k fhvs were working at the same time (they're not) it's a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of other vehicles on the road at any given time in the city. Reducing the available road space for cars and trucks by 40% is a much bigger issue. Pair that with the city's recent policy of aggressive strict enforcement of traffic laws that used to be suggestions in a futile attempt to quench their insatiable thirst for revenue like it's some podunk town in Mississippi and you have a recipe for exceptionally painful gridlock.

I agree that the whole Vision Zero push is what creates this mayhem. But to say extra 60k vehicles on the road ( more like 100k by now) is a drop in the bucket is flawed thinking and understanding that leads to exactly the mess we have now.

Been in PA 5 years and I don't know why I didn't move here sooner tbh.

I miss literally nothing about NYC. Anything I miss I find a close enough substitute in for 1/4 of the money, and some things here are better. The NYC I used to love died somewhere around 2005. Back then it was still fun to drive there sometimes too. Good old days, lol!

The city blames Uber but all hack licenses come from that NYC agency called the TLC. So its really just ppl looking for work caught in between a storm of confusion that the city the state and its politician's can't control
They helped create the problem so they can make alot of money fixing the problem. It is all very much under control of city council
