Don’t answer the phone!!!

Scammers are only going to pull their scams over the phone, they’re not going to text you about it.

A lot of the BS that goes on with riders at pickup is stopped by insisting on text.

I’ve had it happen many times, I arrive at the location and I start getting inbound calls. I use the automated reply button that sends a text message saying “sorry I can’t talk right now” which also ends the call. That happens a few times and then they cancel and I get the cancellation fee. Or the timer just times out and I collect the cancellation fee that way.

What you avoid by doing that are the awkward phone conversation where the person on the other end tells you that "they didn’t order the ride", or "the baby was playing with the phone and ordered the ride accidentally", or "the address isn’t right" etc.

Either way THEY want YOU to cancel right then so they don’t get a cancellation fee.

Tonight (Lyft ride) I arrived at the location and after waiting a couple of minutes the inbound calls start. I send the text message and end the calls. With about 30 seconds to go on the timer a woman comes out and says that I am "at the destination in the pick up with somewhere else" (though I can see on the map that both the pick up and drop off her at the same location). She asked me if I’m going to drive the ride and I said it has to have the correct locations. While we’re talking I send a text message through the app so that way once the the timer tines out I can collect the cancellation fee. She walks away end says “then you go ahead and cancel” with a snotty voice. Now the timer has expired. I do cancel and collect the cancellation fee and drive off

or just put your phone on do not disturb while you are working. You can add important #'s like wife, husband etc to get through. Much easier.

I tell them you ordered the ride, you can cancel, I don't care. I told that to someone who was playing some kind of game when he was saying he ordered another ride. I'm like why didn't you cancel right away instead of wasting my time? You knew where I was, you can cancel. Also if they are more then 500 feet from the pin then I tell them they need to fix the pickup point or cancel and order again. Had one guy I know was trying to game surge on a pool ride, putting the pick up about 4 blocks from where he was, said he was a driver, I said that's nice and ran out his timer and got his fee. I never get scammed when I pick up the phone, you just gotta know how to deal with them and they'll never get over in you

Most of my phone calls are productive, like I could only put the pin at the front entrance but I'm at the side door with all my luggage and guests, can you go there and they are so happy because the last dumb driver didn't answer their phone so they got stuck with a cancel fee. Now I have to defuse your garbage attitude, pick up your phone and quit being a wuss about it, your in a service industry, act like it

I second that last sentiment. Everyone has a phone, nobody answers them. But still...it is amazing that cheapie scammers will attempt to skip out on an $8 ride fee by gaming things. It's stuff like this that lead me to drop Uber altogether. Way too much hassle. The limo work has its troubling pax too, but it pays far better.

Accept. Shuffle. Repeat.
This pandemic has worn away my hope that Uber pax are reasonable. I just got an UEats complaint I never delivered the food. That is such BS. I triple check the address every time.

I have gotten like 3 of these in the last 8 months. Pax definitely are trying to scam these days for free rides and free food.

I drive a lot, and a short while ago I picked up an unsavory guy who I'm sure was dealing drugs who in the middle of the ride he canceled it! Then, when I told him what he did, he kept insisting that he did not and kept telling me to drive and drive to his destination. I didn't want to get into an argument so I did that. Then he told me during the ride he was going to tip me $10, which he obviously did not. Because the ride was canceled.

After the right ended I notified support as soon as they were open and informed them what happened. then support adjusted the fare to where I dropped him off. too many pax are trying to scam these days so I agree with the OP.

Everyone should be on guard.
