Upstate-NY is all of NY State north of NYC-Suburbs (Westchester County, Rockland County, and Long Island). Rates in all of Upstate-NY, from Buffalo to Binghamton to Albany, appear to be the same. Uber is new in Upstate-NY so there are few expectations. It may be useful to compare rates in nearby areas.

What is your "Uber-cut"? This may be the difference between the driver pay rates that you see and the gross fare rates in the table below. 30%-33% or more has been reported. 20%-25% was standard before Upstate-NY opened.

Uber has announced significantly lower rates for NYC-Suburbs than they had been charging and are currently charging for NYC. What worse for everyone, Uber may be taking a significantly larger cut, above the current 25%, out of what riders pay. The "Booking fee" effectively increases the Uber cut, especially for short trips. The only good news is a 22 cent per minute charge for wait time after 2 minutes and the minimum fare is $7.

Update: Booking fares increased July 8, 2017

UPDATE: Lyft has identical rates as Uber with the following exceptions:
  • Driver keeps 100% of cancel fees.
  • Lyft pays return tolls (if you email support), but not CT-to-NYC surcharge
  • Lyft pays (and charges) same rates in Jersey Shore as the rest of NJ

Minimum Fare $7, I get $3.66, that means Uber is keeping 48% of that fare, in Downtown Buffalo
Effectively you're correct, but the way the math works is actually
$7 rider pays - $1.80 booking fee = $5.20
$5.20 - 30% uber cut ($1.56) = $3.64 (net driver receives)
Do you see a 2 cent addition (maybe called min fare adjustment) in your favor to explain the discrepancy?

I get the math, when you have 6 or 7 of those, it just brings you average rate down quickly.
True. That's why people on this forum that do the math, factoring in expenses, depreciation, and taxes; are always complaining about low pay :( And most of them only had to deal with a 20%-25% Uber cut.

I think simply the easiest thing to do is allow tipping in the App. Cash tipping is always preferred though. I am sure Uber will take 3% for the credit card transaction, and then it will be added to out 1099 statement also.

Thanks for the info. I'll make corrections to the table.
