So Not once, or twice but three times today I had Parents requesting rides for their kids. The first was a simple 12 year old going to a friends house, When he got in the car I asked if he was riding alone and he said, "YUP."

I then told him to go grab one of his parents so I could speak with them.

He want and grabbed Mom, and she came outside.

I told her,

"Ma'am, I can't take him by himself, he's not old enough."

She replied, "Ok, I'll just take him then, just cancel and keep the fee. no worries."

(I thought that would go worse, but I'll be glad to take your $4 for driving 1 mile.)

Second however was a doosy.

Pulled up in a Suburb on the southside at 4:30

Two girls get in the back seat, and we are apparently waiting for two more, I then ask.

"Quick question, How old are you guys?"

One responds,

"I'm 16, she's 17, and our two friends are 17."

I say,

"Someone over 18 (besides me) has to be in the vehicle during the trip."

She replies,

"We took an Uber here and had no problems, when did that rule change."

I say,

"Its always been in effect, alot of drivers don't enforce it."

One girl then hands a phone to me and asks me to speak to her mother. Mom asks what the problem is and I explain to her the same thing, She then insists I cancel and make sure she isn't charged (she was.)

I then cancel her ride and make U turn and park in a spot 50 feet from their house, I'm curious what the next driver is going to do. I then go offline and sit still, not a word comes out of my mouth and i'm facing forward. One of the girls asks what I'm doing, I say "I'm taking a break."
She says, "Oh well we'll just order another rides since your such a TIGHT ASS about the rules."
I say,
"If another driver wants to take the risk that's on them. I'm just sitting here minding my own business."
She say.
"No, You acting like an As***le just sitting there waiting. You going to snitch on us to the next driver
I say,
"I'm not acting like anything, I'm just sitting here, you approached me."
(In reality, I was going over the terms of service so if any of this happens in the future I can have it bookmarked on my phone if I need it handy.")

I left two minutes later.

The third one was alot calmer,

Young kid comes out and jumps in the back, I ask how old he is and he says 15, I ask if he's riding alone and he says yes. I give him the same speal and he says of course no other drivers give him a problem. I tell him that someone over 18 can ride with him if they are available. He comes back out and says "Mom can't come right now, What if I give you $10 extra?" I say no. "Ok, can you explain this to my mom?"

I say Sure.

Mom Comes out and asks what the problem is and I tell her its against terms of service. She was clam about it and explains she was in a pinch and needed to get him back to his Dad's place tonight. I apologized for not being able to accommodate her but I can't skirt the rules and put myself and her son at risk if there is an accident.

Sorry to Rant but I need to ask you guys, Have you had Parents mad at you? Do you verify age if they look under 18? Do you request ID? Do you trust their word if they say they are 18 but look 16?

Love to hear back and be safe out there.

I wouldn't take the chance... it's not a worthy risk. If the person that requested to ride isn't in the vehicle and you have any doubts I dont see anything wrong with asking for age/id.

Imagine if anything happens... You're going to get asked why you had riders that were underage without a legal guardian. Things will just go downhill from there.

I'm sad that parents are doing this. Like wtf? Do you watch the news? How are you gonna send your kids off to ride with some random stranger?

May god bless America.

Yes, am experiencing the same exact problem throughout the entire metro. And after validating my concerns about this, I am now strictly enforcing & collecting cancel fees.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Wished more drivers would comply with the guidelines.

Am, also, paying attention to addresses, in mid afternoon, & simply not accepting schools whatsoever.

LOL.

I wish that happened to me. I have a dashcam. Driving for Uber is so entertaining.

I had the same thing happen to me up in Buford last week. I pulled up into a cul-de-sac and this teenage girl walks up to my car munching on a english muffin I lowered my window said hello my name nomad and ask her how old she is. Of course she says that she is 18 and then I ask her for ID. She then says oh it's in the house. She goes back in her house and cancels the ride. I always tell myself that one day I was going to report these kids to uber and this time I did. While I was looking for the right menu in the app I get a request from her again so I accept and she cancels. Then she walks out of her house and tries to get my attention. I was parked on the cul-de-sac opposite to her house. She yells I canceled the ride and respond I know. After about five minutes I finish the report and head out a few minutes later I get a request from her again and accept just to mess with her. What may be more interesting is the email exchange I had with uber during the remainder of the day.

Your not alone. It has gotten so bad that i avoided parks, schools and anywere else kids withought pairents are. I alwayse ask for id to confirm age i have had a few pairents ***** me out. It sucks because i have picked up teachers and even a dissabled vet at a school once ( he was talking to the students about serving and being dissabled) it was a good service to pick him up. It almost did not happen because i was so sure it would be a minor, luckilly it worked out. When people dont follow the rules customers get used to it. However customers lie so who can tell. Report them to uber ( assuming uber actually do anything) then move on. Its was not worth the risk to me.

I truly don't understand. You guys are Ok with breaking some rules , but not others.

If you get into an accident with an 18yr old in the car , what's the difference ? Ubers not paying for your stuff , and you're too poor to get sued ....

Don't know/care - I'm not taking their kid and that's that.

No and no. If I suspect that they may be under 18 then they are automatically ride denied by me, no questions asked. The reason is that if you card a young pax who is over 18, they often get bratty/huffy and low star you for enquiring. Anyone who owns their own teenager and has one at home will know the big sigh, the pained expression and the attitude that comes over them. No thanks - it's happened to me before on a couple of occasions; no more.

I'll decline their ride request and save the low ratings for when I need to eject Friday/Saturday night drunken dooshes.

I follow all of Uber/Lyft rules to a T.

I also will not give PAX a ride if they try to cram five people in my car or if an infant is with them without a car seat. This is a part time "Job" I do on the weekends only, My wife and I own our own home and have three Cars. I'm by no means too poor to be sued.
