Ubering on Long Island
Hi! I am a newbie and have been ubering in New York for 4 weeks now. I live on Long Island and usually end up ubering in the city. However, since I am a Long Islander , I would actually prefer to do uber on Long Island. I have started accepting pings on Long Island but I am worried. I have some questions about ubering on Long Island? Can we uber on Long Island? I mean ....Uber does show up requests on Long island....So, I believe we can do uber on Long Island. Do we require any special licensing to do uber on Long island? If so what other licenses should I get to do uber here on Long Island? I want to be legal driving uber on Long Island. How do I do it? I often drive around Huntington, Syosset, Oyester Bay, Garden City, Hicksville and pretty much all of Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Please advice me regarding what I have to do to avoid getting in trouble with the police here on Long Island. Thank you.

You can get ping wherever uber is available. The database of uber don't check the driver license if he/she have proper licensing for that particular area the system check who is close by. I did pick up in Long Island before too but the calls are so far apart that I have to drive 6 to 10 miles to get to the fare and it's only $6 call
Anywhere on the 'Guy-land is legal except for East Hampton (&Montauk?) but Uber has said they've ceased operations there so you shouldn't get EH pings . With NYC TLC license and plates you are legal to pickup most anywhere in the country EXCEPT Newark Airport and Newark Penn Station. Uber has given me pings for EWR which I decline - who needs the hassle of fighting a stupid ticket in Newark even if Uber will reimburse!?You can get ping wherever uber is available. Not true about ubering in Long Island being ok as long as you have tlc plates. In Nassau you will get ticketed and towed if you get caught and in Suffolk I believe it's just a ticket. People are doing it and some of the pickups are guys who have a Nassau county tlc license plate. The Suffolk county tlc is fairly new, I believe over a year and I'm actually going tomorrow to their office on veterans highway to get info on what's necessary. I live in Suffolk count and have NYC tlc plates but don't want to risk it till I'm legal and yes you do get pings here. I left my app on and I get pings from stony brook, ronkonkoma train station amongst other places.

Reciprocity is the way it's written in the TLC rules.
For example, a licensed fhv out of NJ can legally pick up at JFK or anywhere in NYC, if they are taking the passenger back to its licensed jurisdiction. This is true for a licensed FHV out of CT, Nassau, Suffolk, etc.
Same is true for NYC licensed TLC vehicles. We can pick up at EWR, Nassau, Suffolk, CT, etc but the trip is technically illegal unless the passenger's final stop is in our licensed jurisdiction.
Uber TLC licensed vehicles have gotten ticketed at EWR because the passenger was going to a destination in NJ.
Even though Uber will dispatch us to passengers in these jurisdictions, that doesn't make it legal.
They are just playing the odds that we won't get caught. If we do, they pay the fine since they are making a lot more in the long run.
Hey uberrose. I went to the tlc office earlier in the day like I said and I was greated by 2 people that worked the front desk. That was pretty much the whole staff. The Suffolk county tlc might have 3 or 4 employees max, it's actually comical comparing that office with the one in lic. There was literally not one applicant there. The girl at the front desk told me I just need to fill out an application for a Suffolk county tlc license and another to register my car. It's 300 for the Suffolk county diamond the first year and $250 every year after that. You'll need your license, ss card, defensive driving course and the application signed and notarized. There is a $50 application fee, then after you've done that they'll direct you to get fingerprinted and drug tested. I believe those fees are the same as in lic but it didn't say on the application so I'm not sure. If all goes well you should then have your Suffolk county tlc license and diamond. Before I forget there is a question on the car registration application that asks what base you are affiliated with and asks for the address and phone number. I'll be using the uber base shmecklen or whatever the hell they call it for that and I believe it should be fine. The girl at the front called her boss when I asked about registering my car in Suffolk even though I have NYC tlc plates so I'm guessing they don't get a lot of NYC drivers actually doing this. Meaning, if I get licensed by Suffolk TLC - can I legally pick up in East Hampton without requiring their "city permit"?
If that's not the case, then the Suffolk county TLC diamond is meaningless.
Also, are you certain that they'll allow you to be affiliated with a NYC base and still get their diamond sticker?

No. This post is partly BS. If you are an NJ/CT Uber driver you will ONLY get pings for trips originating in NJ/CT while you are physically located there. If you get a drop-off in NYS then you will have to dead-head back to NJ/CT to get another ping.You can get ping wherever uber is available. Yall are going about this all wrong IMO. Personally in not giving a shit about other permits. My tlc license and car is enough. I dont really care if im gonna get fined because this isnt my career its just a part time job; if i get fined I'll stop ubering and i wont pay it. Yesterday did almost a full day out on the island, mostly parallel to the Ronkonkoma branch of the LIRR; i.e. Bethpage Mineola Farmingdale Wyndach. Had a pretty good day. I would recommend Farmingdale airport as you have private flights coming in all the time. Might get a nice ride back to the city
