It woud be interesting to see how this compares to a market which is also mature but not regulated as is New York. New York is one of the rare examples of a regulated Uber fleet, more so than other markets. The base rate has remained quite high compared to other mature markets. My guess is that the swings would be even more noticeable in mature markets with standard rates in the basement.

I'm not sure about logically or statistically comparing surge in other industries, I do know that If I buy an airline ticket a year in advance or walk up to the counter 10 minutes before a flight time if you told them that you only want to pay the same as the lowest fare they would definitely laugh at you and fart in your general direction. Surge may be unfair and manipulating the market but it is not a precedent in any way and the concept of supply and demand is most blatant in the consumer car fuel market. If I know for a fact that a gas station hasn't been replenished and yet they station can sell the same gas that's in the underground tanks for any variety of price levels. how between 10a m and a futures market report or a report of a refinery fire or a radical group in Butfucistan blowing up a tanker make THAT tank suddenly increase by 50% literally suddenly. Its the same stuff that was there an hour ago. it's probably useless to complain too much, surge and no tip button benefits the uberoverlords and ain't gonna change any time soon on it's own

Uber can talk about supply, demand, and pricing all they want... but none of those principals of economics apply to what Uber is doing. Supply and demand only has a natural effect on price when multiple suppliers can submit multiple offers and multiple consumers can submit multiple bids. Where there is a match of an offer and a bid is the natural market price at a given time. Uber's pricing on the other hand is a determined by a software program's algorithm. It's laughable to compare Uber's pricing model to gas and hotel prices which are real free market prices.

Well PAX should not complain...there has been many a night I was heading to the barn only to be brought to life by a surge.

No surge and these PAX are not getting home OR to that strip club.
