I had a twitter conversation a months ago with a reporter about this.
It *was* ride share until that lie could no longer be used to describe how Uber is different from a taxi. After all, when I *share* my things, I get to decide whom to share them with, but drivers no longer get to decide who to share their cars with, so now Uber and the press refer to it as ride hail, and have decided between them that it never was ride share, and that ride hail is somehow also different from what taxis do.
I'm glad Caroline O'Donovan was specific and clear about how drivers are independent contractors and not employees in the story. The more people know we are not employees but everyday people, perhaps there will be more sympathy, empathy or otherwise less shit rained on drivers when a company does something stupid.
