Uber and Lyft continue to be staffed by part-time drivers, according to Morgan Stanley, with the Uber drivers completing an average of 44 trips per week, and Lyft driver 23 trips. A typical taxi driver does twice as much business, performing 91 trips per week. So thousands of people still driving a cab feel the job is lucrative enough to do it full-time.

Depends on the city. There is still work out there for cabbies, they just have a smaller piece of the pie. The real hit they took was in the value of taxi medallions. In NYC for example, a medallion worth $1.2 million before UBER is now only worth about $50K. Drivers that planned to retire by selling those medallions, and companies and investors who held onto or mortgaged out medallions are hurting now.
