For those who haven't seen it yet- uber sent an email today about increasing the "safe ride fee" from $1 to $1.75.
What they're basically telling us is - they realize that riders are willing to pay more for their rides. But instead of increasing the base rates by a few pennies per mile or minute and allowing drivers to get a cut, they are putting the raise in the fee which uber keeps 100% of. It doesn't take much math to see that it's a not-so-creative way of giving themselves a bigger % of the gross take.
A $5 min ride will now be $5.75. Uber will get $2.55 of that, or a whopping 44.3%.
Uber is a scummy company and I wouldn't be driving for uber if I wasn't basically desparate for the money right now. I encourage everyone who doesn't absolutely need the money to QUIT ASAP and don't look back. Without surge, we make barely enough to cover our expenses as it is.
Uber exploits drivers, here are a couple other examples:
1) Bait and Switch- I signed up last year under the original rates, and then Uber slashed the fares at the beginning of the year taking a huge chunk out of each driver's income. All while blatantly lying to us claiming that lower fares would increase our profits.
2) Cheating on guaranteed incentives- uber rarely offers guarantees anymore. But when they do, I ignore them and you should too. On 2 different occasions I had uber refuse to pay for the hourly guarantees saying my acceptance rate was too low. They claimed that I declined multiple pings that I never actually received.
This post is long enough so I'll end it here but I could keep going on
