OYE VE!

SAN MATEO, Calif. (SFGate) -
A California Uber driver is in custody after he allegedly dropped off a passenger at a Bay Area airport and then promptly attempted to rob their San Mateo home, police said.

The driver, Jackie Gordon Wilson, dropped off an unidentified passenger for a flight and then drove back to their house in San Mateo with the intention of burglarizing it, San Mateo police said. Wilson's attempt was thwarted, however, when a Ring security camera caught him in action and an alarm system went off.

However, another nearby resident wasn't so lucky. That homeowner also had a Ring security system which recorded the burglary, but when police arrived they said they found the home already "completely ransacked."

The owners were able to upload the video to a Ring community sharing platform, which helped them to identify the man as an Uber driver who dropped off others in the neighborhood at the airport.

The next day, police said they located Wilson in Rancho Cordova, where they found him to be wearing the same clothes as appeared in the Ring security videos and in possession of several items from the burgled home.

"This case proves the benefit of a home security system particularly with video," San Mateo authorities said. "Law enforcement is solving more crimes thanks to surveillance cameras and license plate reader systems."

Wilson was booked into the San Mateo County Jail for a burglary and attempted burglary, but police are still investigating the incidents in an effort to uncover any other burglaries in the area.

"We removed the driver's access to the app as soon as we were made aware of the allegations and stand ready to assist police in their investigation," Uber said in a statement.

Oh, this is not the first time Uber drivers have pulled this stunt. Happened in Colorado, I think, over a year ago.

Surprised it doesn't happen much more often.

I had always wondered, even when driving a cab, if the pax realize we can see their name tag on the luggage, and possibly phone number, as they dash inside to get the rest of their luggage.

Why would that matter -- it's just as easy as going back to the empty house you picked them up from...

Classic.

Who caught the line in the story that referenced license plate reader systems. Like the recently discovered Cape Cod Canal bridges cameras reading and data storing over 1 million plates in the last 3 years going over the bridges.

A good portion of pax I deal with use a different address than their own. They will use one a few doors down a lot. I don't mind that they do it, to each their own, it just bothers me when they do that and then when you are in front of their house they say, "right here is good" and just expect me to slam on the breaks and let them out in that exact spot. Whenever someone says "right here is good" I always pull farther up and make it a point to pull into a spot. I always try and find the safest place to pull over anyways and try and get as far over so other cars can pass me. It amazes me how many drivers take up the whole right lane when theres a spot they could move into 5 or 10ft up.

Livery guys with the black cars are the worst. They drive 5mph while they try to figure out the correct address and then just stop all cock eyed in the road. I swear they go out of their way to make things impassable instead of using other space available.

Then again most of them can't drive for shit either. It's comical (and pathetic) watching them do 15 point turns into a parking space in the TNC lot.

I never really understand how you could handle driving a Suburban in Boston's chaos yet be so oblivious as to where the vehicle ends. It's kinda mind boggling.

They are by far the worst on the road. Completely oblivious to their surrounding and think cause they're in a giant SUV they can drive however they want and expect you to move for them.
