After Uber Driver Is Shot And Left Brain Dead In Cicero Carjacking, Concerns For Rideshare Drivers’ Safety Keep Growing More Serious

CICERO, Ill. (CBS) — It is getting harder for rideshare drivers to know if they are picking up a customer or being set up.
As CBS 2’s Jermont Terry reported, that was the feeling Tuesday night after a father of three was shot in the head and left brain dead during a carjacking in Cicero – after he handed over everything.

One juvenile suspect was apprehended. As Cicero police looked for the other three suspects connected to the deadly carjacking, the victim’s family asked what else could be done to keep other rideshare drivers safe as they grieved the loving father.
Joe Schelstraete

Joe Schelstraete (Supplied by Family)“A devoted father – just very, very engaged with his children,” said his aunt, Kim Bova.
That is why Joe Schelstraete’s family could barely find the words to tell his 10-, 12-, and 14-year-olds their dad won’t be home again. (He was being kept alive to harvest his organs for donation. On Wednesday, he passed away. )

“This has been – in my opinion – the hardest part for her is speaking to the children,” Bova said.
Schelstraete, 38, was on the job driving for Uber at 7:30 p.m. Monday. He pulled up to the intersection of 55th Avenue and 23rd Street in Cicero expecting a passenger. Instead, Cicero police said he was met by four robbers.
“They didn’t have to kill him,” Bova said. “He would have given them anything they wanted.”
In fact, the investigation revealed Schelstraete did give up his cellphone and cash – yet he was shot in the head anyway.

“It definitely appears to be a series of very violent situations for independent drivers,” Bova said.
Two weeks ago, another Uber driver was pistol-whipped and carjacked at the very same intersection in Cicero.
Over the weekend, Chicago Police issued a warning to rideshare drivers after several drivers were shot or robbed since May 21.
And now family reveals Schelstraete was attacked weeks earlier himself.
“He had a big bump on his head, and he promised his mom he wouldn’t ever go back to that area for calls,” Bova said.
He was in a new area Monday night, but a more violent situation. Police arrested one teen.
As police searched for the others involved, the family said the young age of the carjackers should not be taken into consideration with prosecutors.

“These juveniles are so much more callous and misguided – so much more mature,” Bova said.
Family told Terry that driving for Uber was Schelstraete’s second job. His main job was for a steel company in Northwest Indiana, but he used the extra money from his Uber job to help his children.

On Tuesday night, those children were dealing with his loss.

UBER: “Nuh-uh!”

Also UBER: “Self-defense is banned! You must drive into the hoods and accept the fate!”

Below, “Uber community guideline”.

(@@@@ Uber and Lyft, latter with similar policy. Lyft banned me earlier this year, Uber just banned me as deactivated last night...thanks for nothing.)

@@@@ you, Uber. Your policies caused this poor man’s death. Uber must be sued out of existence by the dead and maimed Uber driver victims’ families.

This can happen anywhere and it has. God rest his soul. There was a female driver killed about a month ago in Georgia. Her passenger hid her in a crawlspace in the house and they didn’t find her until days later.

Look, all the Rideshare company needs to conduct background check on riders. We don't need to deal with , being pushed potentially dangerous individual riders into our car . Period.
Since they don't pay our car , fuels, maintenance fees , amenities costs , we don't need to deal with this wack jobs for exchanging our vehicle costs as our earnings excluding labor fees .

You read what does it's says . Don't deny it . LMAO 🤣😆

Local Taxicab companies are charging riders barely to keep it's business as we All knows. Business means profits to it's company, drivers, maintenances cleaning on it's vehicles etc .

Like UBER ... Not just stealing money and efforts of drivers and giving away that cost to give discounts for the riders or stealing Investors money and keep drivers to shut F up and watch them suffers . What a losers ... Can't even satisfy it's drivers in minimum levels .
If they can't even think of reasons they CREATES reasons to deactivate drivers .wasting all that money scammed out from

LMAO😂👎

That cheaper fares itself giving lower boarder walls to cross over those unruly riders into innocent driver's own cars to cause troubles .
Basically, UBER is the one giving lower standards unruly riders into someone's cars . Watching and enjoying to see drivers getting killed or suffers in daily bases . Very cruel and abusive to be honest with ya. Have you seen xock fights ? What do you think of those audiences who are betting those animal cruelties happening in secretly ? That's who they are . Chickens.
Unlike Taxi cab UBER is the one collecting riders and drivers like a membership group or organization . But they don't and would never has a ballz to conduct background check on Riders. That means ex- convicts who murdered or commit heavy crimes who are on parole can be riding with nice dorky innocent drivers in any given moment of time....as we speak at this moment, a young college dreamy eyed girl who just got a brand new car with her dad and moms help or she is on car payments loans and driving as we speak right now right this moment Some one who had committed heavy violent crimes who were in prison , or bailed out with bail bonds .

And UBER SITS THERE IN A LITTLE TINY CUBICLE ... touching little tiny thumb fingers eachothers watching what's gonna happens pretty soon or not. Feeling thrilled and enjoying it and getting a kick out of nightly TV news .

Then with one little pinky finger . They initiate the same old message ...
"We are all saddened with this terrible news.... " B.S.... Scums
😒👎
