An Uber driver was charged Saturday with possessing cannabis and driving around with a weapon while he was a felon, officials said.

Chad Pilcher, 41, of the 300 block of West 91st Street, was charged with possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, possession of cannabis of between 10 to 30 grams, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of a weapon without a valid gun card and not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Officers pulled Pilcher over about 3:25 p.m. Friday because he wasn't wearing a seat belt while he was driving in the 1100 block of West Foster Avenue, police said.

When officers approached, they smelled cannabis coming from the vehicle. Further investigation revealed a handgun with a defaced serial number, police said.

Officers later discovered he was operating as an Uber driver, and his passenger had hired him via cellphone. When officers ran his name, they found he was a convicted felon and it was illegal for him to be carrying a gun, police said.

Police recovered a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun with 13 live rounds and one chambered round, along with 24 grams of marijuana, prosecutors told the judge.

Pilcher was arrested and scheduled to appear Saturday at a bail hearing where he was order held in lieu of $100,000 bond by Cook County Judge James Brown

Did the po-po "discover" that he was an Uber driver just because they found a device that was logged in to the Uber application in the car? Did the Police actually see that it was this guy logged in or was this guy using his brother-in-law's Uber application?

There is not enough information, here.

What a genius to drive around without a seat belt with all of this going on in his car.

Perhaps police should conduct random Uber/ Lyft & taxi searches ?

They already have the right to search any vehicle or person at airports.

He had a pax with him, along with a chambered .45 and 24 grams of weed. Not to mention a convicted felon, serial # on the weapon was defaced and of course "no seat belt".

And an article I read said the car smelled of marijuana.

Maybe the pax didn't mind, but he definitely shouldn't pick up people, especially with babies and toddlers, like that.

Another reason taxi and Uber drivers should have mental health clearance before being entrusted with pax. No, I don't get drug, alcohol or mental health checks to drive a cab. If the public only knew...

Is it because we're all independent contractors that we're exempt from these tests?
