The approach at any American multinational company is almost identical and one can see it quite clearly in the case of UBER.
1. First they give you a lollipop to lick >> worker works hard for that lollipop
2. then they slowly withdraw that lollipop >> worker works harder to get that lollipop
3. Worker realizes he ain't gonna get the lollipop ever >> he slows down
4. Company thrusts the given lollipop up the workers arse, hoping he will work harder >> worker slows down further
5. Company withdraws that same lollipop and offers it to fresh new recruits.
Moral of the story
So just remember, the lollipop you were licking, was earlier sitting in someone's arse
