I posted about the emerging electric scooter a couple of weeks ago. It was just a matter of time before Uber/Lyft got in on this.
"Once Uber is allowed to operate electric scooters, the plan is to integrate them into the Uber app and continue fleshing out CEO Dara K's vision for a full-fledged multi modal transportation platform."

This will fit in nicely with the Uber X, Uber Pool, and Express Pool paradigm of looking for the cheapest, most efficient( not necessarily the safest) way to get from point A to point B in an urban environment. It will end up eliminating many of the short rides Uber/Lyft drivers get at rush-hour or on Saturday/Sundays during the day. Will reduce (not eliminate) the need to call for an Uber to run around and get a few errands done, go down the street to meet a friend at a local eatery, etc.

Some thoughts:
---San Francisco weather is not Chicago weather. Demand would definitely be affected by winter although all of us have seen folks riding bikes in a snow blizzard around town. Same idiots will be riding in the snow.

--- The same "f*ck the traffic rules" mentality will prevail with the scooter riding crowd-----blowing through STOP signs, going the wrong way, weaving around traffic. We've already seeing it with a few privately owned ones zipping around town.
If you thought bikes were a problem, you ain't seen nothing yet. These are a lot faster than a typical bike rider so situations will pop up out of nowhere for drivers. Just think of a scenario where one of these comes zipping out of an alley and merges into a side street or main thoroughfare.

I don't believe these things have any sort of lights on them----what can't be seen will be hit. Lots more to worry about for Uber/Lyft/Via drivers-----actually, for all drivers, not just rideshare.

---"I've only had a couple of drinks and a few drags off the weed pipe so I'll be fine taking a scooter home----I'm not going to waste money catching an Uber. I'm only going a few blocks---a mile at most."

---Scooters lying around all over the place after being used by riders----already a problem in the cities where the services are operating.

---Rahm will push for this in Chicago.
