I am registered to drive in Massachusetts out of Boston

I drove someone from Western Mass to the Canadian border but I did not have my passport

We were on Route 89 north if memory serves

The last exit on the American side was for a town called Highgate

This was the closest I have ever been to the border

This US citizen has never been to Canada and I did not have my passport on hand

My rider was concerned that if I crossed the border, I could not return without proper documentation

The US side of the border was a Netherland with no human activity or cell phone service

So, I got my rider as close to the border as possible within plain sight of the security structures

She walked from there and I hightailed it south in the pouring rain

Nine hour round trip

I asked Uber Support if I could have driven up to the border and turned around

Sorry, our resources do not have that information

Has anyone dropped a fare off at the border and turned around?

If Uber had been concerned with city, state or national law where would it have gotten? You had a passenger and a destination. Sure if your stopped there is the potential for lockup by 3 jurisdictions, but its potential...the pax in your car is real.

I'm just curious, was the destination an address in Canada when you started the trip?
great question

the original destination was Burlington, VT

rider missed flight to Montreal for her niece's wedding

changed destination to Highgate before we reached Burlington

She had a cab waiting across the border

MAKE SURE YOU ROUTE TO A WALK-ABLE BOARDER CROSSING

If memory serves me right you can't always cross by foot. (some of the bridges)

I would kick them to the curb well before you hit the boarder.

I would NOT be taking people accross any national boarder in either direction, the smuggling laws are strict and the penalties harsh, and it's very easy for the passenger to claim it's not theirs in which case anything border patrol finds is on you.

I've dropped off several times at the I-5 crossing between Washington and BC. Never a problem. Ridesharing is currently illegal in BC, so that's another reason to not cross with paxen.

It's an easy walk north from Blaine through the crossing and into White Rock.

I got into the crossing lane by accident without my passport and told the Canadian border guards what I did. They looked at my driver's license and directed me to the U-turn road that leads to the US entry point. No troubles at all.

I'm sure every border crossing may be a little different. The only one I was ever familiar with (US/Mexico at San Ysidro, CA.) had a sign something like "last exit before Int'l border". You had to exit there and go to a "people crossing" if you were parking and walking across or dropping someone off. If possible, probably best to take a couple of minutes to check how it's set up where you're going online prior to setting out if the passenger doesn't know, maybe by googling the crossing or calling a helpline for Customs if one is available.

All I know is even if you have a passport, you probably never want to drive over the border (Northern or Southern) for an Uber drop off unless you want to spend a few hours waiting to cross back.

Sounds like some trip, if you don't mind, which part of MA do you live in?

no comment, I just want to know if I can make a u-turn at the Canadian border without getting hassled

why would you ask this question?

Hahaha I drive in San Diego. Uber sent me several pings with destination in Tijuana! I also took Uber in Tijuana and put in drop off location as San Ysidro border. It cam up as on the US side, had my Uber hombre very concerned. Uber doesn't give a shit. You must use your head. So yes we drop off pax on our side of the border all day long, and they walk over. Once I did drop the pax in Tijuana and the system still paid me.

And how long did it take you to cross back? Every time I've been to that border, the traffic to cross appeared to stretch for miles, and it was always a bit of a wait just to walk back across but not as long as driving.

I have Sentry so 5 minutes. I was going out in TJ anyway that night so I didn't mind .It's illegal for me to drive for money in Mexico without a Mexican work permit though. Will never do it again.

**** off troll

As long as you stay on the American side there shouldn't be a problem. The PAX gets out walks across and you are on your way.
yes that is exactly what happened and I got a healthy tip for my troubles
