So this afternoon I was parked in front of a building in Foggy Bottom that I had just dropped off at when I got a ping from the same building. I immediately get a phone call from the rider saying she didn't expect me to arrive that quickly and she would be there soon. I appreciated the heads up and by the time I could wait for another ping and drive there honestly it would have probably taken just as long. I decided to give her 7 instead of my usual 5 before I would cancel-no show.

So it's 6:45 and I'm starting to get ready to speed out of there when the door opens and there's a woman with a stroller walking toward my car. Already regretting this. She starts taking apart the stroller/car seat and says "I forgot my hat and need it for my appointment. Can I run up and get it?" Seeing this as my opportunity to get out of there I say sure go ahead. I get in my car to cancel once she was inside and out of site when I notice that she left her bag in my backseat. I was stuck. Waited 5 minutes for her to come back downstairs and then another 5 minutes for her to install her car seat. If you're keeping track it's over 15 min at this point and I haven't even started the trip yet.

Finally get this woman in the car and she's going to Georgetown. From Foggy Bottom. $4 ride. Take her there and drop her off. Not even a thank you or apology for wasting my time.

tl;dr: I made a bunch of rookie mistakes I know better than to do just trying to be a nice guy. Won't happen again

No good deed goes unpunished. With stopwatch running, I will drive off at 5:05 , even right in front of the pax who tell me the're waiting on someone else. I will tell them, time's up, request another Uber. The look on their faces? PRICELESS.

People do this all the time, leave something on purpose to guilt you from driving off. I've accelerated a passenger's end of trip by tossing his groceries on his lawn after a minimum fare ride. I will never pick up from grocery stores again.

Was the stroller empty or had a child?

and when she took the stroller/car seat apart, she left it in the street? or took it with her when she "ran" back into the building to get something?

When strangers think they are entitled to your time because they are not organized, they need to acknowledge your sacrifice and investment. Am glad you gave her a 1 star review but more happy that you are a nice guy who has good intentions.

I'm turning into a mercenary. I don't care how hot the girls are, I'm here for money, not looking at women. If I want to look at hot women, that's why Al Gore invented the internet.

I was in the nightclub business for a long time. I've had women way hotter than any Uber passenger try to get away with shit like 'do I have to pay cover? I'm a girl, do I have to pay for all my drinks?' 'Yes you do honey. Cash or credit card?'

Gas, grass or ass, nobody rides for free. I don't smoke & I'm not banging you so show me the $$$$

P.S. if she left the stroller WITH the kid in it not only would I 1* her I'd call Child Protective Services

Stroller had a kid. I wouldn't have let her go and leave me with her child I'm not that dumb lol. She took the stroller back up with her that's why I thought I'd be in the clear to get out of there.

Yeah I know. Like I said, I made a bunch of dumb rookie mistakes that I know better than by this point. I don't generally start the trip until we are in the car and ready to go though. If something were to happen where we don't take the ride I'd rather collect my cancellation fee than get a minimum fare and give the rider the option to 1 star me

Dood, next time cancel the trip and take the bag. Dumb biaytch can order another car and make an arrangement to get the bag. You plead stupid and that you didn't know she was dumb enough to leave her purse in the car. I would NEVER leave my purse in the car and go back upstairs for anything. That's just dumb. Especially my Gucci messenger bag purse. You gotta be kidding! No woman in her right mind would leave her bag in the car just to run back inside. I don't even leave it in my own car if I have to run back indoors.

Also, she should order X plus car seat. That's another reason to cancel. I don't transport babies. But if I got that $27 fee, I would.

I start the trip as soon as I see the pax getting close to my car. I just want to have the directions loaded and be ready to pull off right away.

I've done the same as in waiting a few extra minutes because I was really close by.

If the pax ever happens to call you ask for their destination.

You were allright on the first one. There are times when I understand that they just did not expect such good service so I will give them an extra minute or two. It is an old radio cab driver habit. As I always practiced as a driver what I preached as a dispatcher, I did this. There were times when I did have to remind a driver who was looking at a job that I was calling that he did need to give them an extra minute or two.

You got nailed by an old slow passenger trick called an "anchor". People have been doing this to cab drivers for years. These people are not as stupid as some posters here would have you believe. They know that they are slow starters. They know that they are not ready when they call/submit the order. They know that drivers do not like to wait for them and will leave, after a time. Thus, they want to make sure that the driver waits. They will put something or someone into the car that the driver can not simply put out onto the kerb and drive away. Purses are one common "anchor". The most common "anchor" is minor children. You can not just put them onto the kerb and drive away from the address. I let this happen to me once. That was enough. You can tell the not ready parent/guardian who is bringing children to the car. I see it, I lock the doors, get out and ask, if they are all ready, are we putting everyone into the car and going immediately or are we not quite ready and need to go back inside and get_________________? If I do not like the answer, I tell them to call when they are ready and drive away from the address.

People do this all the time, leave something on purpose to guilt you from driving off.
Yup, we called it an "anchor" in the radio cab business.

Al Gore invented the internet.
That one just will not go away, will it?

There are some places, nightclubs included, where the young ladies can show off their assets and get what they want. It does not always work, but it does in some places. I had more than a couple of guys who worked clubs tell me that guys actually got further with them. It worked like this: Guy wants to do something that he really has no business doing. Nightclub worker tells him that he can not do that. Guy says "That's funny, my friend, Andrew told me that I could". Depending on what it was, sometimes, his friend was correct. Several of us cab drivers once pulled up in front of the Prime Rib without jackets and ties. We got a meal and drinks, there. They did not even offer us the house jackets and ties.

When I was a Teaching Assistant at a rather large public institution in the Northeastern part of this country, we used to get these females in the classes who were marginal students. They would dress rather provocatively and did not think that it was obvious what they were doing. Duhhhhhhh: you do not wear a tube top in February in the far Northeastern part of this country. We used to call them "lollipops".

I start the trip the second they open the door or any of their belongings are in my car, mostly for insurance purposes.

In your scenario I would have been nice and professional on the phone but once 5:01 hits I am out $5 richer.

Never, ever answer the phone or texts after you cancel, it won't lead to anything good. Let uber explain the 5 minute policy to them.

One time I was picking up the second pool passenger and immediately get a call once I get to their pick up address. 2nd pax tells me to drive to a different location...they are 6 blocks away. I tell the pax that routes can't be altered, she gets mad and hangs up but doesn't cancel the ride so I just sat there for 2 minutes with the 1st pax in the car to collect my $5. The look on the 1st paxs face was priceless, I am pretty sure she gave me 3 or 4 stars because of that despite the fact that I was doing her a favor. The gall some people have to inconvenience not only me but another passenger in my car.

The only time I wait is when I am picking up a group and they are waiting for the other passengers but I make it a point to let people know I am doing them a favor and so far people have been very respectful over the fact that I am extending my waiting policy, most tip. If someone got an attitude with me they would be waiting on the curb for another driver. Come to think about it, no one has ever been rude or nasty with me. I would say that 98% of my riders are nice, it's the 2% that will upset you.
