Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to weigh everything up regarding start up costs to become an Uber driver. I understand the F endorsement on my driving license, but I'm really not so sure about the exact requirements and costs for my vehicle. It appears an Omnibus license (rego) is required and subsequently additional costs. It looks like $276.60 annual licensing fee for Omnibus rego plus $504.35 for MII (insurance) fees. Of course my personal insurance I will up for ride sharing. These are the largest fees. Are these correct??? There seems to be confusion between what I read at DOT and what Uber told me. Help Please!!!
Thank YOU

Hello, Yes what you mention is correct but your car rego will be a cost as well, either quarterly, 6monthly or annually. and to get the F endorsement, this will require a commercial driving medical with a cost of approx $150-

Thanks Bluwhale. So the Omnibus rego fee of $276 is on top of my normal rego which needs to go from private to commercial? Yes, figured in the medical costs already.

Ill sumerize it for you.
I started 6 months ago as a casual pass time.
It cost a total of about $900.00 for everything required to start.
It took about 6 weeks to work through the steps to be allowed to drive.
Now
After gst and fuel costs out only I make about $14.00 per hour on line. The car mileage totally is averaging at $0.38 per total kilometre driven.
Best of luck if you wish to proceed.

Hello Friend,

I started with Uber about four months ago. I was a little confused by the process as it has changed in the last 12 or so months. My Dad started driving with Uber about 18 months ago and suggested it was easy....which it may have been then, but not now.

Costs are around 1k or more depending if you need to do any work on your car to pass the omnibus inspection. This was my experience.
To get the F extension on your drivers licence you need to get a full medical and be passed fit to drive. This was about $140 as it is far more than a standard consultation by a GP. Uber obtain a national police check on your behalf and send it to you at no charge. Once you have those two documents you can apply to the Department of Transport for the extension to your license. You also need to supply two character references (they didn’t contact mine) Cost was about $240 and took three weeks.

For the omnibus licence which is now required by Uber to keep you on the platform you need to apply to DOT online and then book an inspection. Cost about $120. They are very thorough. If a re-inspection is required (and it probably will be) another $80.

Once you have passed that, you need to go to a license centre and get a copy of your updated rrgo details, about $270. Uber need to see all these documents. I found it easier to go to the Osborne Park office and let them upload documents.

You also need to get an ABN and register for gst. The tax department are hot on this. Called me within a few days after starting to make sure I had registered. No charge for this.

Uber also get red book to inspect your car. There is no charge for this.

I drive Uber X and Select. I don’t do nights and drive a few afternoons a week and love it.

If I can help in any way, don’t hesitate to contact me.

I used to drive Uber about 2 years ago but gave up when I got a full time job and too busy.
Now things have quietened down in the current job I will probably go back to Uber/Go Catch/Hi Oscar/ all of the above to add a few extra dollars in the kitty.

I see that Omnibus License is required but does it also mean you have to attach the CVL plates for extra money or can the original plates stay on?

Cheers
