That truly is the question...imho. I completely understand how so many Drivers on here want to find a way to earn fair wages for their time and costs. However, I do not believe waiting for surges is the way to do it. And here is why. Whenever there is a surge my ping rate slows to 3-5 minutes, whereas with low (1.2) to no surge I get pinged on Friday & Saturday nights in Los Angeles every 20 - 30 seconds. The exception to that would be midnight to 2am when the bars are closing and people just want to get home - then even 1.5 - 2.0 surge and I am pinged in under a minute. What we have to put up with during those hours a surge is imperative.

Yes driving at regular X rates is just barely minimum wage, but sitting and waiting for a surge can be even worse if one is skipping everything but a surge fare. And, even if there is a surge it might be $7 trip that took, with driving to pick up and waiting for the surge, 20 - 30 minutes.

I gross $20 - $30 an hour on Friday & Saturday nights (5pm - 3am) with 150 to 200 miles total driving (20 to 30 trips) I accept every trip that pings me. Of course if it is 12-15 minutes away (quite rare in L.A.) I will call the Rider and let them know that if they cancel me they will probably get a Ride quicker. If they say they can wait, I will keep the match and pick them up.

I believe Riders skip the surge pure and simple. When Uber is surging I turn on my Lyft App and get a fare pretty quick. Which is ironic because Lyft non-surge rates are the same as Uber at 1.2x surge. And Lyft is not as blatant about their surge. Never had a Lyft pax complain about their surge.

For certain I consistently earn the most on long trips (20-30 miles) and I get 3-4 of those a night by not waiting for a surge...because most pax are not going to take that long of a trip on surge; I wouldn't.

Lastly, I know for certain that Riders ding our Driver Rating with 1 Star when they are hit with a high surge fare. And, just like some Drivers cancel low rated pax, I do not want the hassle of starting my ride up, pulling away from my sweet waiting place, or changing direction, only to get cancelled. I rarely get that and don't like those couple o times a night when it happens.

I had a 2.2x trip @ 2am from DTLA to San Bernardino one night = $151. Warned the App holder's gf that it was going to be expensive, she was like It's okay my bf wants me with him. My Rating fell the next day. Similar one from Hollywood to Costa Mesa on a 1.9 - rating fell the next day.

I take surge rides when they come my way, and I agree with trading that kind of money for the 1 star, but I don't sit and wait for only surge trips.

Never said I like the non-surge rates. I like making money with the 10 hours I am out there two nights a week. Do I wish Uber would set the per mile back to $1.50? ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY!

Smart thing to do is to think as if we never had surge and it didn't exist. For the full timers there is no choice so any ride is a money ride. For part timers is different. Any one that drive for Uber has a different objectives
I tell Riders all the time that it's next to impossible to make a full-time living driving Uber - Respect to the Full-Timers for sure.

the old joke is, someone says that chocolate, or skydiving, or surfing or whatever is "better than sex"!! the reply is "You must not be doing it right then". By ALL means, take NON surge rides. non surge is never better than surge. you are simply not doing it correctly. playing the surge game takes a bit of patience and skill(meaning right time of day or night in a busy area) and sure, some luck(meaning catching a long mileage fare). I like nothing better than watching my uber rider app as one by one the non surge takers cars disappear, and then bazinga! SURGE! sign on driver app and PING! off i go. give surge ride. SIGN OFF!!!!!!! wait for surge! lather, rinse and repeat people. SIGN OFF UNTIL SURGE!!! and using rider app to monitor surge will cut down on your ACRO. SIGN OFF until surge, fellow drivers.

If you don't drive Surge you'll be burning up your car twice as fast. It's very easy to see.
Now matter how awesome you think those $50-100 fares are, the reality is your going to have to return from the DO home or to a place your familiar with. Cutting that 80¢ per mile you're making in half. Which isn't even enough to cover car operating costs.
Think about replacing your car. You're gonna have to do it at some point.

Why in the hell would you tell a rider that it's going to be expensive?!?!? WHO DOES THAT ? Are you stupid or stupid ?

Not my problem if it's expensive for them or not. They agree to the fair when they order a driver!

I'm so torn on this question. Last week I took X with and without surge and Select. On the Uber email report they show I was at $28 fares/hr for the week. Seems to me that $28 but driving a few more miles is better than $20 and driving less.

I have tried working both ways and I am earning more not playing the surge. And yes I understand my expenses are a bit higher but I seem to be earning more than enough additional to make it worthwhile.

On another note, Im pretty well convinced that surges are man made by Uber the majority of the time. How is it possible to go from a 2+ surge to no surge in 4 minutes and then in another area no surge to surge back to no surge in 4 min? They must have an algorithm set up to rotate it so no one area is hit forntoo long, this increase their profits and makes drivers believe there is more demand than there really is. What do you all think?
