It's a registered car with insurance. Doesn't matter where you go as long as its not going to be used for work in canada. Check the rental contract first to make sure they allow you to leave the country with their vehicle lol. If it doesn't say anything then I wouldn't ask, I'd just go. Can't imagine any owner being happy you're driving up to canada

They will most likely stop you at the border and even if it's allowed by your rental company expect a hassle from Canadian border patrol..they don't play around..when I had a tlc rental vehicle I took it to New Orleans and Vermont 3 separate times without issue..I was renting from Buggy at the time...no idea if they allowed it or not and honestly I could care less..that's 10000 miles they are eating that I'm not putting on a vehicle I own...in country in different...don't take it to Canada

You can pass the boarder with the a TLC vehicle, however if you are renting, better check with them if you are covered to cross the boarder. There are specific rules for For-Hire vehicles crossing the boarder. The owner of the vehicle is responsible for the people the vehicle brings over the boarder. If there is an issue with one of the people (i.e. is not allowed to cross into Canada), the vehicle owner can be fined unto $10,000 per person. If you cannot pay the vehicle will be impounded until they are paid.

If you are not being paid to go...I wouldn't take the chance taking an income vehicle that far

TLC insurance only covers the car inside of NYC, outside of NYC - do you have a separate non-commercial policy on the vehicle?

+ if car is rented/leased: check with the company that owns the title on your car.

tlc insurance (american transit, herefored whatever) covers it in NYC, conneticuit, NJ, PA, and like 1 or 2 more places. If you crash outside of the insurance agreement, you will pay out of your pocket.

So yes you can drive to canada all you want, but its on your risk.

U can take your tlc car to Canada but don't do it if u do not have full coverage insurance on it. Liability only covers u inside the 5 boroughs. I took my tlc to Montreal last summer and sung around to Toronto and back down to niagra falls. Didn't have a single problem at the borders. Also, u will see a couple SUV guys who go up there with there families in there tlc suburbans

So, did you end up driving up there? I am curious. I own my car. Still paying for it. Not a rental. Insurance is ny and surrounding states. Not Canada obviously. But if there is no problem I would drive up there. Thinking of driving to Montreal when it gets warm a bit.
