Recently someone posted a suggestion for "dueling tip jars." I can't find it at the moment but would like to give credit here once I find it again.

I had already been thinking about ways to inject some humor as a way to encourage tipping without it seeming pushy, and eventually designed the attached "Mom's Taxi" sign. Then I went to the craft store and bought 2 canning jars that would fit in my forward cupholders, along with pre-cut slotted lids (keeps cash in - keeps fingers out) and created a "Mom's Vacation" sign. I seeded the jars for effect, placed them in the cupholders with the "Mom's Vacation" sign posted above. "Mom's Taxi" signs were posted on the back of the passenger seat, and on the back of the (lowered) passenger side sun visor.

Out of 5 rides yesterday (before the brake debacle that sidelined me, posted elsewhere) I got 2 tips and 1 offer by a confused new rider who wanted to tip and thought it was handled by the app. I'm sure if her husband hadn't already exited the vehicle and gone into the business I was dropping them at, he would have provided the tip. I've only ever gotten 2 tips EVER in my previous 25 rides.

And the group of young people in my last ride of the night called me "Moms" the whole way home. :p

I don't see this as guilting anyone - it's more in the vein of fun and actually the sign was an excellent conversation starter.
I got a lot of advice on where I should go (if I can ever afford it!). The true non-tippers were the shorties.

Be careful, all it takes is one sleaze bag to take picture and report you for soliciting tips and complaining how uber was supposed to be cashless.

Believe me, you are sharing oxygen with people like that but they are out there and will eventually report you.

Don't know if it's grounds for deactivation after the recent court order but, this is uber and they have the past of not caring about legal decisions much.

Best case scenario though, your ratings will plummet by 0.9 mile flip flop traveler shite bags, who know nothing but to leech.

Pax know they should tip, trying to guilt them into it is a bit tacky and you will take a ratings hit.
Oh please. *eyeroll* Tacky is pressing a button on your phone and being picked up curbside and whisked away to the destination of your choosing for barely more than bus fare...and then not tipping the driver. That's tacky.

People have no trouble tipping the sky cap at the airport, the cab driver, the barber, the bartender, the waiter, the pizza delivery person. When it comes to the Uber/Lyft driver...a person who is shouldering the entire expense of maintaining the equipment being used to provide the transportation, people are suddenly too sensitive to be reminded that a tip would be nice.

And, no, clearly pax do not "know they should tip," which is why so few of them actually do it.

Because you are a female it is cute. Because I am a man with ear hair and receding hair line it is disgusting and perverted just like me. Doing that in my vehicle would be looked at as intimidation and strong arming.

Ubers buisness model is that "there is no need to tip " and it has been ingrained in pax not to tip.

All of us know that so there should be no expectations of tips.

We all love getting tips, but putting signs up reeks desperation and unprofessionalism.

I'm not doing this job any more, thankfully. When I was, I kept a cocktail glass in the cup holder with a couple of dollar bills in it. I didn't hang any signs or call anyone's attention to it. The presence of the tip jar was enough to get the message across. I don't think it's tacky at all. It has been customary to tip cab drivers for as long as I've been riding cabs.

Let's admit. The majority of riders are cheap ffukcs and they look for an excuse not to tip.

So, uber knows this and gives them the necessary excuse to not tip. All of that "I thought it's taken care off through the app" "don't have cash" is bs.

I used to drive Uber Suv and there were people who said"the app will take care of the tipping right?" I'd inform them that no, there's nothing included on top of your fare, but they were more than welcome to tip in cash if they wanted to.

Now 1-2 out of 10 would be embarrassed and try to tip. The rest? They would say "Oh, interesting...didn't know that" and thank me and walk away. And these are the ones using the expensive service for a 1 mile trip, not uberx or pool.

Go figure how cheap ffcuks some people are. They got the excuse and they just hide behind it. It's not like they want to tip but they can't. They don't want to. The moment you call their bs, they'll run away.

Calling yourself a Taxi MAY be a crime in your jurisdiction

See how Lyft does it : Taxi App Alternative
Just to clarify, there is no exterior signage, so I am not "advertising" myself as a taxi. Not only that, but how many times have you seen "Mom's Taxi" license tag frames? It's tongue-in-cheek, and nothing more.

All I can tell you is that I got nothing but positive vibes from this experiment. There will always be the occasional sorehead. 'Cos I didn't offer water. Or I didn't offer mints. Or I don't have precognition about where they are vs. where they dropped the pin. So what's new? ;)

Riders are thicker skinned than we give them credit for. Rideshare Guy did an experiment with a humorous, masculine-themed tipping sign that actually says "tip", along with a treatise on how and why we should "normalize" tipping for riders. Makes perfect sense to me. And nowhere does the word "tip" even appear on my signs.

Thanks to a win in a recent lawsuit UBER now can no longer deactivate drivers for soliciting Tips (at least in California). I now receive questions about tipping from customers as well as $2-$5 cash tips a few times each day. I have not put out a tip jar yet, but if I did it would be with a sign that says "Tips appreciated! :), Uber drivers are no longer at risk of de-activation"
