Like the title says, I am thinking of driving for Uber as additional income. I live in MA; how is business for drivers around cape cod? I assume there will be a boom in the summer? What other hot spots are there for drivers trying to make money?

I do have a few more questions, so excuse the noob status. What is required to cross state lines, be it NH or RI? I understand that I can drop off there, but need to come back to MA to pick up. Is that correct?

Are there any special vehicle requirements? I have a 2008 SUV. It has a few dents which I heard is a no no so I am going to try getting those popped, nothing that requires serious work, just some PDR. At that point, what is required for the vehicle inspection? I have good tires, brakes, state inspection.

Is there any requirement for insurance? I read Uber basically covers you while you are on the clock for them. Is that enough? I have liability only on my regular policy and want to know if there's any reason to change that.

Thanks very much in advance!

You need to sign up at Uber U. They'll answer all your questions, and more.
Classes are starting up in June for summer session.

You're fine with your car and insurance. The issue with your car is gas mileage. Ideally you'd want a more fuel efficient car. If you sign up in mass you have to pass the state background check which is more extensive than Uber's. But you can then drive in ri and nh too if you want. The cape is good in the summer but you need to learn the best demand spots and times.

Good call on the Cape Cod plan. You would think it was a no brainer but the Cape still suffers from a 500 uber driver shortage every summer.

Fog a mirror and you can join the fun.

good to know. My SUV is a hybrid and gets ~26mpg average, more in the city. Worth trying out to see if I like it, if so maybe I'll get a cheap prius and drive it until the wheels fall off. Thanks for all the info, I lived on cape on and off for the past 10 years so I know my way around pretty well.

Uber dosn't cover you when you have the app on but haven't accepted a trip. Your personal insurance also does not cover this "gap".
I've heard about gap or rideshare insurance, stuff I will look into then.

In regards to the state background check, state Department of utilities will check your driving record through the registry of motor vehicles, as well as pulling a CORI report on you, so if you have ever had to appear in court for anything in MA, that report will have it listed. I strongly suggest that you have your CORI report sealed Pryor to applying to drive.

As for your car insurance, technically, there is a state requirement that you have rideshare insurance. Companies that offer this coverage include Allstate, Plymouth Rock, Safety, Commerce (MAPFRE) and Geico. There may be others. Specific companies have varying requirements.

Thanks, I am not really concerned about CORI results, shouldn't uncover anything problematic. I have Mapfre currently so I will see what adding rideshare entails.

I had Mapfre, they're horrible when you need them, switched to Geico the cons:you have to do everything over the phone
Geico is different from the others, in that they don't provide gap insurance. Rather, they provide a commercial policy that covers you 100% of the time. So if you have an accident while pax is in the car, or when you have accepted a ping but not picked up yet, they will cover damage without needing to go through Uber or Lyft, and paying a higher deductible. You still have option of using Uber or Lyft insurance if you want, for the claim.

As opel mentioned, everything is done online or over the phone with geico commercial. Their local offices are for personal lines of insurance only.

There will be a boom in the summer. A boom of new drivers which means less and less surge and even lower rates.

Cars have to be newer than 10 years old. A 2008 will be right on the cusp.
