Guy slopes out of an apartment off Wilshire, K-town, somewhere. He sits in the front. I start the trip. It's blank. "Where to?" I ask. He puts his fingers in his mouth and gives me a forlorn look. "Umm...where shall I go?"
Where shall you go? How about back in your house, you sad sack? You're so lonely and needy, you think I'm going to ride around with you just to make you feel better? I'm not your friend. Get the hell out of my car!
Have some compassion, you don't know what happened to that guy today, maybe someone close to him died, maybe he's suicidal, you're getting paid regardless, just start driving and make some suggestions-
This is part of the job if you're a cabbie (which you are, but not technically) or a bartender.
Still, I don't blame you too much Lord S. Sometimes one just don't feel like wet nursing some pathetic schlub. People are lonely and disconnected. Hence, the fifty thousand people on UP.net.
If he's a junkie I totally agree with what you said, but you used the word sad. If he's literally sad, you should show some compassion. That could be you one day, do you really want someone to kick you to the curb when you are sad? Use a better word.
Pro Tip -> Carry a bag of those long balloons in your glovebox. Usually when I get a sad sack in my car I will make them balloon animals and put on zesty salsa music. It turns that frown upside down!
Can't wait til I'm paid 200/hr to listen to people's problems.
