I was finally approved for Uber in addition to Lyft. I am borrowing a low mileage 7 seater so have uber xl and lyft plus available. Yesterday I left the house at 4pm and returned at 8am, Saturday to Sunday morning. I kept track of the numbers and still trying to figure out if this makes sense with all the mileage and new surge policies. I kept Lyft and Uber open and would turn off the other app upon accepting a fare. Often times 2 would come in at the same time so I would accept the Plus or XL fare if available. I went through a tank of gas around $35, during the night.
Lyft I accepted 6 rides turned down at least 10, 3 were Plus fares and total received was $72.48
Uber I accepted 29 rides and turned down 35 and cancelled 4. Total received was $237.45. I had 10 XL fares and 19 Uberx fares.

Tips, included in the above numbers were $5 total, from 1 group on Lyft
Uber tips were $31 with mostly $5 tips from xl passengers.

I never had time to hit the airport and was busy mostly all night. How does this compare to CLT regulars? I am new to the area and been driving here 10 days.
thanks

So how many miles did you travel with a pax in the car? And how many miles did you put on that vehicle for the entire night? From home back to home?

I am not a mathematician, but that looks to me to be about 12.50 an hour after gas. Only you can decide if it is worthwhile. It makes me feel pretty good about my hourly driving return on a 2005 civic hybrid only driving for Lyft.

Well, points well taken. No more driving through the night. At 2:20am last night a drunk driver totaled my car, 100 yards before I picked up my uberxl fare from the same bar. Driver was taken to jail and booked on dwi, I am now without a car, no injuries though. Bottom line, not worth a few extra bucks.

God doesn't do Uber. Obviously "Independent Contractors" are not his Chosen People.
Otherwise, he would have sent someone to lead drivers out of persecution and slavery.
Sure, there's a precedent, but any Flight From Charlotte's still a longshot.
If I had money, I could Fly Away From Charlotte. Airport is only 4 miles from me right now!

Maybe He will after 400 years.

We don't know how many miles he drove, but the numbers can be broken down a bit further. Hopefully the OP will return with the number of miles driven.

His average fare (to him with tips) is $8.85
He ran 2.18 fares per hour which is the highest number of fares that I have seen per hour. Normal fares are 1.25-1.45 per hour. There must have been a bunch of short runs. He actually over achieved by 12 fares on this 16 hour shift. That is an incredible number but could be due to running the two apps at the same time.
13 fares were XL or plus. (37%)
22 fares were X or regular Lyft. (62%)

We need to know the total miles driven to determine his costs. Those miles will need to be divided and expensed between the 35 fares.

I did have a bunch of short xl trips with big groups and some nice tips. Mileage was approximately 250 miles that night. Uber finally reached out 5 days later and I am covered with a $1,000 deductible, but my own insurance had already settled and totaled the car by the time Uber got around to calling. I have gone ahead and purchased a Prius for Uberx and Lyft fares, may try and use an XL on Friday/Saturday nights. Found the diamond in the rough, 2010 Prius with 16k miles, owned by 97 year old woman with all service records. Basically annual 12v battery changes, they kept dying from not being driven and oil changes. Car is running great. Last night 300 miles driven, hit my uber $25 weekend bonus so $196.70,with bonus, total income and $16.50 in gas. After depreciation I made $15.23 for 11 hours of driving and 22 trips. The numbers are not good, but with this car, I can put 70-80K miles on it and not lose. Using $.55 per mile for depreciation my net income is going to be very low driving for Uber/Lyft.

Oh, and last night I was rear ended before the crosswalk while going to pickup a passenger at the airport. Lady was on her phone and ran into me. Time for a new bumper on the Prius.

If his XL vehicle gets 20 miles per gallon, I believe he will have a real cost of vehicle including gas of around $4.07 per fare. That would allow 7.55 miles per fare at .54 cents a mile. He would have driven about 264 miles or about 16.5 miles per on duty hour. This would total a real vehicle cost of about $142.69 for him to provide the service. It's more likely than not that his costs are going to be somewhat higher than my example, but this is all we have until the OP comes back.

Using these numbers, he has a net of $10.45 per hour for the 16 hours. This is including tips. He earned $2.25 an hour in tips. If you take the tips out of the formula, then his rate is $8.20 per hour which would put him below the minimum wage. So tips are an important factor in getting ride share drivers over the minimum wage. However he is not being paid for the 8 hours overtime that he worked at 1.5 times the regular rate. He is also responsible for his own payroll taxes.

So what looks like a good day, is not such a good day when you consider the 16 hours that it took to produce $131.24 plus $36 in tips for a total of $167.24.

As an example, if the OP had worked the same 16 hours at Wal-Mart, at the starting pay of $11 per hour, then Wal-Mart would have paid him $88+$132 overtime for a total of $220. In addition Wal-Mart would have paid his payroll taxes which would equal another $24. I'm using Wal-Mart as an example, but the same rules apply to most employers.

Keep in mind that I believe that a driver should make more than the minimum wage and more than what someone would be paid at Wal-Mart. I do not believe it is unreasonable that a good driver should be making $20 a hour for the service that they provide at this time. It takes skills and knowledge.

We have people's lives in our hands and that has to be worth a least $20 an hour.

Wait! What I got from this is OP worked for 10 days in a borrowed car, boasted about earnings in the form of a question. Then was T-boned a day later. Did I miss something?
Then bought another car which is a pristine Prius. And was rear ended and needs to buy a bumper for that not so pristine Prius.

Probably stopped in the middle of a busy street because the pin was right there and wondered why he got it from the backside.

I was in airport arrivals when I stopped at the cross walk, following traffic crew instructions. T-bone occurred when drunk driver was coming straight at me on pickup at Icahns in Lowell. I have cutback on the hours now. I have been avoiding the airport parking lot, yesterday there were 89 drivers ahead of me in the que if the app was right.
