Many of us use this forum as a venting platform to complain about pax. They can be entitled, cheap as ****, obnoxious, rude, careless and inconsiderate, to say the least. But sometimes there's a shining star amongst the paxholes; a generous, cool, funny passenger who pleasantly surprises you by leaving a generous tip on a 3.2 surge ride. I had one of these rare gems yesterday - a mother/daughter duo visiting Santa Monica for the weekend. They were cool, fun, easy to talk to, and tipped me 50% on a 3.2 surge.
Why can't they all be like that?
My (unscientific, unverified) findings:
The more I drive, the more I realize tipping is a generational thing. Millennials don't seem to have any concept about tipping, because all they've known in their lives is Uber, which erroneously told passengers that tips were included when they absolutely weren't. Taxis are an unknown to millennials, and every person on this planet who has taken a taxi knows that you're supposed to tip your driver; it's a non-issue, an automatic, a given. I received 3 tips yesterday, all were from people over 40. The millennials, regardless of how fun/cool during the ride, are ****ing morons about tipping. Clearly we need to EDUCATE these entitled folks and make sure they learn the culture of tipping and the fact that drivers deserve tips. We are a US city and the US is a tipping culture, like it or not./rant over
Sorry to go off topic, I am genuinely curious to know about other drivers' shining star passenger stories, there must be some out there because I know there are good and generous pax in this world who know tipping is the right thing to do.
PS: I really wish that we could see the ages of passengers before we accept a ping - I would absolutely avoid all pax under 30 and JUMP ON pax over the age of 40. Pax under 30 = almost 100% chance of NOT being tipped. Basically, under 30 = entitled, non-tipping paxhole alert!
